Roy Scheider dead at 75

Roy Scheider, who starred in some of the biggest hits of the 1970s and will be best remembered for his role as the tortured police chief in Steven Spielberg's blockbuster Jaws, has died.

Scheider, 75, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, in 2004.

According to his wife, Brenda, the Academy Award-nominated actor died yesterday at a hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, which specialises in treating myeloma. She told reporters the cause of death was a staph infection.

On soaps he played Kenny on THE EDGE OF NIGHT, Jonas Falk on LOVE OF LIFE and Bob Hill on THE SECRET STORM.
