News Brief

Sydney Morning Herald: A new British TV drama starring former NEIGHBOURS heart-throb Jason Donovan has failed to impress British critics, who have branded it "lame" and "downright insulting". Two decades after farewelling Ramsay Street, Donovan is back in a soap opera - as the star of ECHO BEACH.

Digital Spy: Former EASTENDERS star Phil Daniels has offered a reward for the return of a jacket that he wore in cult film Quadrophenia. The actor, who played Walford's Kevin Wicks, was devastated when the khaki-green coat was stolen from the back of a friend's car on Monday. The coat, worn by his character Jimmy in the 1979 movie, was being taken to a film exhibition after being in storage for 20 years.

omg!: Despite the Golden Globe Awards being reduced from a swanky dinner party to a no-frills news conference because of the writers' strike, gift suites remain in full swag. At least five freebie-filled events beckoned nominees Friday. At The Bali gifting suite for The Golden Globes, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS star Crystal Khalil and Vale Bloom enjoy their swag.

What's On TV: Actor Ray Winstone has turned down the chance to appear in EASTENDERS, according to the papers. The Mirror reports that the movie hardman - who is friends with Samantha Janus - was approached to star as Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell's dad Archie, but declined the offer. I'll play her fella but I'm not playing her dad," he joked.

Khaleej Times: On one of her first assignments, Kym (Douglas) fell in love with the actor she was interviewing, Jerry Douglas, the star of hit U.S. soap, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. “When we married, I was thrown into the Hollywood scene,” she recalls, “I would show up at all these awards shows and see women who were literally flawless. The reporter in me set out to discover what their secrets were, and I’ve been doing it ever since.

Liverpool Echo: It's time to welcome a new television anti-hero: Jonathan Pope, a man so deluded he actually believes Simon Cowell is someone to look up to. Pope, played to pompous perfection by the brilliant Ben Miller, is the new, over- the-top hot shot producer brought in at the eleventh hour to launch a new soap set in an idyllic Cornish resort. His madness is on display in the behind-the-scenes comedy MOVING WALLPAPER, which is based in the ECHO BEACH production office and immediately precedes that show (both ITV1, Thursday and Friday).

Press Association: Many people may still be labouring under a cold virus, after last year's mild autumn. But anyone feeling grotty can content themselves with the knowledge they're not alone. CORONATION STREET stars Sue Cleaver - aka Eileen Grimshaw - and Beverley Callard, better known as newlywed landlady Liz Tomlin, were forced to go home ill. Their absence has thrown the soap's filming schedule into a spin, with a source claiming: "The workload is so hectic any hiccup meaning scenes are rescheduled is a nightmare."

Daytime Confidential: AS THE WORLD TURNS fans want to "Save Henry" played by Emmy nominee Trent Dawson.

Happy News: Talk of the writers strike buzzed around a Four Seasons ballroom Friday as stars gathered for a no-pressure awards lunch hosted by the American Film Institute. The AFI Awards honored 10 films and 10 television programs of 2007, as selected by juries that include critics, academics and others in the industry. There were no winners or losers, and no acceptance speeches _ just a lunch of Lake Superior whitefish, truffle herb mashed potatoes and chocolate cake. The honored TV programs were "Dexter," "Everybody Hates Chris," "Friday Night Lights," "Longford," "Mad Men," "Pushing Daisies," "The Sopranos," "Tell Me You Love Me," "30 Rock" and "Ugly Betty."

Standard Speaker A Hazleton Area High School senior got his wish to be a soap opera actor recently with the help of a national TV show. The show MADE, which appears on Music Television (MTV) today at 3 p.m., will feature Erik Calarco. The show engaged acting coaches for Calarco – actor Jacob Young, a cast member of the ABC daytime drama ALL MY CHILDREN, and actress Rachel Feldman.
