Rick Springfield To Sing On 'General Hospital' For First Time

For the first time ever on ABC's "General Hospital," actor and musician Rick Springfield will sing on the multi-award winning daytime drama. Airing on Thursday, August 23, Springfield will perform the song "Who Killed Rock 'n Roll?" from his upcoming album due for release in early 2008.

In addition, national non-profit LIFEbeat will be incorporated into the concert storyline to educate the audience on the worthwhile, real-life charitable organization that works with the music industry and those affected by HIV/AIDS.

In the storyline, Dr. Noah Drake (Rick Springfield), his son, Dr. Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson), and Dr. Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough) tell hospital patient and rock star Eli Love (Rick Springfield in a dual role) that he needs emergency surgery and must cancel his appearance in a charity concert benefiting LIFEbeat. Enter Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) who quickly devises a plan to transform Dr. Noah Drake - who strikingly resembles the rocker - into the musician so that the show goes on as scheduled. Pandemonium ensues as Dr. Drake tries desperately to become the rock star for whom he is "pinch hitting."

Springfield performed at the 2006 Daytime Emmy Awards on ABC.

Dark Shadows Movie in the Works

Warner Bros. is teaming with Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil production company to develop a feature based on the '60s daytime supernatural sudser Dark Shadows, according to Variety.

Over 1,225 episodes, Dark Shadows was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies. The show has a continuing rabid fan base that populates Dark Shadows Festival conventions. Numerous TV revivals of the series and pic adaptations have been attempted over the years but none with as high-wattage a star as Depp.

Depp has said in interviews that he has wanted to play Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series.

A rights deal just closed with the estate of Dan Curtis, the producer/director who created the soap that aired weekdays on ABC, from 1966 to 1971.

Blind Item

From the August 7th issue of CBS Soaps in Depth:
This Emmy winner is poised for a daytime return but not to the role - or even the show - that he/she won awards for. While negotiations are ongoing between the star and the soap, if the deal does work out, it's very likely that the show would have to cut its cast to make room for the new performer's paycheck.

My guess: Heather Tom

Hunt Block to One Life to Live

According to the August 7th edition of Soap Opera Weekly, Hunt Block (formerly of As The World Turns, Guiding Light and Knots Landing) will be joining the cast of One Life to Live as "as an FBI agent who becomes obsessed with finding a missing person. Think The Fugitive. Insiders say the show was so delighted to get Block that they gave him a bigger role than originally planned."

Coronation Street's Vera Duckworth quitting

Actress Liz Dawn, who plays Vera Duckworth in Coronation Street, is to leave the soap due to ill health.

Ms Dawn, who has played her character for the past 34 years, will leave the ITV show before Christmas.

The 68-year-old actress has the lung disease emphysema and, according to the News of the World, has told Granada she is too sick to continue.

She said she wanted to "thank everyone" for "the best time of my life" during her years in the popular soap.

Producers would not say how Ms Dawn is to be written out of her £200,000 role, but said she would continue to make guest appearances on the show.

Her character's husband Jack, played by Bill Tarmey, will remain in the soap.

She said: "It's been an amazing 34 years. I'd like to thank everyone for what has been the best time of my life."

Race hate plot for EastEnders

EastEnders is to feature a race hate storyline inspired by the Celebrity Big Brother scandal, according to the papers.

The Sun is reporting that both newcomer Jay and bad boy Sean Slater will be seen hurling racist insults at Yolande and Patrick Trueman, in scenes to be screened over the summer.

Current producer Diederick Santer said, "The Celebrity Big Brother race row kicked off as I took charge of my first scripts."

"I thought it was fascinating because it showed there was a real need for a debate about race in Britain. Our stuff won't be overly moralistic but it will tackle this serious issue head on."

Celebrity Big Brother hit the headlines in January after housemate Jade Goody was accused of racist bullying, following insults directed at Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty.

"Big Brother didn't tackle the issue particularly well," Santer said, "so I thought it could be something EastEnders should do."

GH: Nightshift Breaks Ratings Records for Soapnet

The debut of SOAPnet’s original series General Hospital: Night Shift ranked as the network’s most-viewed telecast ever with total viewers and in its target demo, women 18-49. The show was also SOAPnet’s most-watched premiere with those groups and with women 18-34.

Night Shift, which tells of the nighttime escapes of the characters on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital, averaged 1 million total viewers, 498,000 of them women 18-49 from 11 p.m. to midnight, according to Nielsen Media Research. It drew 192,000 women 18-34.

In addition to posting 63% audience growth over its lead-in, the show ranked as the second most-viewed cable program for the night with women 18-49, something of a coup for SoapNet since only 64 million homes carry the network, compared to the 94 million that carry USA, the top network in the demo that night.

Night Shift is one of several new originals SOAPnet has planned. The Disney/ABC-owned cable network primarily runs same-day reruns of soaps at night, including General Hospital and the other ABC daytime dramas.

Nathan Fillion blogs about One Life to Live

Nathan Fillion has commented on Phil Carey and One Life to Live on his MySpace blog.

Phil Carey is one of the big guys. Not just because he is a giant of a man, but rather because he was one of the guys that Hollywood used to groom for stardom. He worked with Henry Fonda, James Cagney, and John Wayne, to name just a few. He was imposing when I met him, I'm not gonna lie. I had just been cast as Joey "Joe" Buchanan on One Life to Live. Still getting the hang of the idea that the bagels and donuts were free, when Phil Carey sidled up to get his morning cup of joe. I had to say something, and I chose, "How are you?" He looked down at the 22 year old kid he didn't know from Adam and responded,
"How are you?"
I was honest. "I'm great. I can't believe I'm living in New York and I'm acting. I love this town and I'm having a great time. I love this job."
He looked back to his pouring coffee, "That's what the LAST Joey said." I had to laugh, and he broke his first of many smiles at me. "You're alright, kid."
So when I got a call to go back to the ol' alma mater to honor Phil, I jumped at the chance. Am I ever glad I did. There they were. So many faces from ten years ago, smiling at me again. There were endless hugs and reminiscing. Newer cast members welcomed me in, making it easy to be at home there. I was making new friends, catching up and flashing back. John Loprino said it best when he said he had forgotten the power of rejuvenating old friendships. I felt it, too. Especially when Tuesday night found John, Bob Woods, and myself in the basement dressing rooms at One Life drinking 25 year old Scotch till two in the morning. Family is important to me, and these people all became my family. I wouldn't be where I am now had it not been for the incredible support I got from the cast and crew of that soapy gem. Needles, Ray Jay, Robin, James, Cassie, and Erika- I owe you all so much. Thank you. Bob Woods, I would never had the courage to leave if you hadn't sat me down and told me to. I owe you.
