Love and period drama for EastEnders' Sophie

Sophie Thompson is currently scaring children everywhere due to her performance as 'mad' Stella in EastEnders.

But she's about to play a completely different character in a forthcoming small-screen version of A Room With A View.

The actress will portray Charlotte Bartlett in the new show, the role played by Maggie Smith in the 1985 film adaptation of EM Forster's novel.

She's the spinster cousin of Lucy Honeychurch, a spirited young woman whose life is turned upside down by a visit to Florence in 1912.

While there, she falls for George Emerson, but denies her feelings because she's already promised to Cecil, a rather stuffy young man.

Whether the path of true love will run smoothly remains to be seen - but it certainly isn't doing for Stella at the moment.

She may have appeared to be a kindly soul when she first appeared in the soap, but she's since shown her true colours.

In recent months, the legal eagle has tormented Ben, son of her beau, Phil Mitchell - but it's rumoured Stella will get her comeuppance on her wedding day during what promises to be a nail-biting storyline.
