Strong subscriber growth has boosted Austar’s first quarter performance, and the regional pay TV company is considering handing back as much as $300 million to shareholders.
Chief executive John Porter said new programming, particularly sport, helped lure 18,234 new subscribers in the quarter, 14,549 of them residential — a doubling on the first quarter of calendar 2006.
He said the AFL was not the only drawcard, with Monday night NRL a massive ratings success, along with shows such as the long-running serial, The Young and The Restless.
