Corrie star's return from crack habit

Coronation Street star Craig Charles says his life was saved when the Mirror exposed his £250,000 crack cocaine habit.

He admitted yesterday: "If I'd carried on as I was I'd have been dead in a year. Either from a heart attack sparked by a drug overdose or because I'd have been murdered by gangsters."

After the Mirror revealed his drug habit in June last year, Craig planned to quit his £150,000-a-year role as taxi driver Lloyd Mullaney. But he was persuaded to seek help by soap bosses.

"I felt resigning was the honourable thing to do. I was in the wrong and had been found out. But they were supportive and told me they'd consider standing by me, but only if I got clean.

"I was so grateful. I said I wanted help and had been putting it off for too long. I'm strong-willed but hadn't been strong enough to fight my addictions on my own."

Six months later he walked back on to the Corrie set. "The first person I bumped into was Bill Tarmey (Jack Duckworth).

"He gave me a big hug and said: 'Welcome back son, you've been much missed.'"
