A Bold & Beautiful Neighbours connection?

Forty years after making her screen debut on You Can’t See Round Corners, Rowena Wallace is back and starring on a show almost as venerable as she is.

Wallace makes her debut on Neighbours, playing a Ramsay Street eccentric known as mad Mary Casey from tonight.

It’s been a long time between scripts for the grande dame of Australian soap, best remembered as Pat the Rat from Sons and Daughters, but she is revelling being back on set.

The 59-year-old actress hopes the role will lead to more work, though she is realistic about an industry not known for its employment opportunities.

“One, there is not a great deal of work for anybody,” she says.

“Two, it’s always harder for women. Three, it’s particularly hard for women in their 50s and 60s.

“I will be having my 60th birthday this year. I consider myself pure grandmother material. I am going to try to corner the market in grandmothers.”

The producers of US soap The Bold and The Beautiful have been in touch with an offer.

“That’s bubbling away beneath the surface as we speak,” she revealed. “I can’t say anything at the moment because I honestly don’t know but it would be very nice if it happened.”
