What the hell do women want? If Channel Nine's experience with its vexed midday slot is anything to go by, the answer is a 24-year-old American soap opera set in Wisconsin.
Or perhaps there's another reason the network's experiment with bringing its daytime roster into the 21st century by replacing soapie stalwart The Young and the Restless with a four-woman talk show has taken off with the trajectory of a wet firework.
Judging by ratings from its performance so far, The Catch-Up - a copy of sorts of US program The View, which aims to present a cheerful gab-fest covering the vast yet largely female-friendly terrain of fashion, gossip, politics, health and relationships - is struggling to find traction among the daytime heartland.
