"Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past; for human events ever resemble those of preceding times. This arises from the fact that they are produced by men who ever have been, and ever shall be, animated by the same passions, and thus they necessarily have the same results."
― Machiavelli

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1952: Radio serial Whispering Sheets premiered. The show was a "serial with a twist." Each new episode presented the story from one character's perspective, and the character that was being focused on changed each day. The fictional narrator--and principal expositor--for the program was "Hope Winslow," a former newspaper correspondent that covered adventure the world over. She retired and became an author of Romance and Adventure novels--drawing on her worldwide experiences as a journalist. It's the fictional Ms. Winslow who provides the exposition that threads and interweaves the daily segments of each week's drama into each other.

1967: On Another World, Bill Matthews (Joseph Gallison) was dejected over not being able to see Missy Palmer.

1967: On Dark Shadows, Joe (Joel Crothers) and Guthrie (John Lasell) use all their might to open Laura Murdoch Stockbridge's tomb, but are interrupted opening the coffin by the Caretaker (Daniel Keyes), who yelled, "No! In the name of the dead--no, no, no!"

1979: On The Edge of Night, Margo Huntington (Ann Williams) loaded her gun and headed to the Monticello Arms to confront Wade Meecham (Dan Hamilton).

1981: Jennifer Runyon made her first appearance as Sally Frame on Another World.  Note: Runyon's Sally would soon become engaged to Leigh Hobson, played by The Brady Bunch's Christopher Knight (Peter Brady).  In 1988, Runyon replaced Susan Olsen as Cindy Brady in the A Very Brady Christmas movie.

1984: On Guiding Light, Mindy Lewis (Krista Tesreau) visited an abortion clinic.

1987: On As the World Turns, Dr. John Dixon (Larry Bryggman) presented his case to the hospital board, explaining why he remained silent 19 years earlier about the information regarding Kim and Bob's baby.

1989: On All My Children, Karen Parker (Ellen Wheeler) overheard Adam (David Canary) say he was the father of Dixie's (Cady McClain) baby.

Thanks to Jennifer for sending in the item above.

1990: On General Hospital, Julian Jerome (Jason Culp) pulled a gun on Jonathan Paget (Greg Beecroft) after he figured out Paget was really Duke Lavery. Paget claimed he wasn't Duke but the man who killed him. Anna (Finola Hughes) arrived just in time to hear Paget's confession, and arrested him.

1992: Louise Sorel debuted as Vivian Alamain in Days of our Lives. Vivian arrived just in time to shoot and kill Alfonse LeBeque (James Cooper), who was holding her nephew, Lawrence Alamain (Michael Sabatino), at gunpoint.

1993: As the World Turns paid tribute to actor Michael David Morrison (Caleb Snyder) at the end of that day's episode ("This episode is dedicated in loving memory of Michael David Morrison."). Morrison died on February 18, 1993.

1994: On All My Children, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) was convinced Kendall Hart (Sarah Michelle Gellar) had kidnapped Bianca.

2004: Actress Mercedes McCambridge died at age 87. She was an original cast member of The Guiding Light radio soap opera in 1937.
