"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1964: On Peyton Place, Betty (Barbara Parkins) was afraid to tell Rodney (Ryan O'Neal) about her pregnancy out of fear he would believe she was trapping him into a relationship.

1970: Actor Herb Holcombe died at age 65. He played Adam Bilodeau in Dark Shadows.

1979: On As the World Turns, when Lisa Colman (Eileen Fulton) tried to show Bennett Hadley (Doug Higgins) the mysterious painting had been returned to his late wife's room and slashed, it was gone.

1980: On Another World, Steven Frame (David Canary) remembered happier times with Alice (Linda Borgeson).

1980: On The Edge of Night, Raven (Sharon Gabet) and Logan's (Joe Lambie) custody battle over Jamey (James Noseworthy) continued.

1982: On As the World Turns, Bob Hughes (Don Hastings) married Miranda Marlowe (Elaine Princi).

1982: On Search for Tomorrow, Stu (Larry Haines) said goodbye to Robert. Brian (Jay Acovone) surprised Warren (Michael Corbett) and Suzi (Cynthia Gibb) as a stowaway on their flight to South America. Warren called Ringo (Larry Fleischman) for help but the plane hit an air pocket and two engines were lost.

1985: On One Life to Live, Woody (Grant Goodeve) explained to Bo (Robert S. Woods) why he was really in Llanview.

1985: Jon Hensley debuted as Holden Snyder on As the World Turns. Near the end of the episode, Holden jumped out just as Lily Walsh (Martha Byrne) and Dusty Donovan (Brian Bloom) were entering Lucinda's stables.

1985: On Santa Barbara, Amy Perkins (Kerry Sherman) proposed marriage to Brick Wallace (Richard Eden), who was now home from the hospital, and he accepted.

1997: On Another World, during a rooftop confrontation with Alexander Nikos (John Aprea), Carl Hutchins (Charles Keating) accidentally knocked Felicia Gallant (Linda Dano) into the skylight which caused her to fall and injure her face.

1998: Before McKenzie Westmore went on to star as Sheridan Crane for the entire run of Passions from 1999-2008, she appeared on Days of our Lives in an under-five role playing Mindy.

1999: On The Young and the Restless, Diane Jenkins (Alex Donnelley) and Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) had yet one more catfight over Victor's vasectomy, which had occurred almost a year prior to this altercation at Gina's Place. And within a month's time, the now-infamous "stolen sperm" saga would begin, taking their feud to an even higher (or is that lower?) level for another year or more.

1999: Jason Cook debuted as Shawn Brady in Days of our Lives.

2012: On General Hospital, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) saved the baby just as Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) jumped off the roof of GH. Heather was injured but alive, and rushed into surgery. Sam Morgan (Kelly Monaco) was reunited with her son. Meanwhile, Tea Delgado (Florencia Lozano) attempted to see Victor, Jr., but John McBain (Michael Easton) forced Todd Manning (Roger Howarth) to tell her the truth: that baby boy was not her son, and her son was actually dead.
