"All true histories contain instruction; though, in some, the treasure may be hard to find, and when found, so trivial in quantity that the dry, shrivelled kernel scarcely compensates for the trouble of cracking the nut."
― Anne Brontë in "Agnes Grey"

1958: On As the World Turns, Jeff Baker (Mark Rydell) was on trial for the murder of Al James. In the courtroom, the prosecutor questioned Penny Hughes (Rosemary Prinz) and got her to admit that she and Jeff had been secretly married but then had the marriage annulled. When the prosecutor upset Penny, Jeff stood up and yelled at him to stop. The prosecutor succeeded in twisting Penny's testimony so that it damaged Jeff's case. In private, the prosecutor wondered if Jeff would testify in his own defense and worried that the jury would sympathize with Jeff. Jeff talked privately with his attorneys, Chris Hughes and his assistant, Tom, who convinced Jeff that he should take the stand in his own defense.

1969: On Dark Shadows, Beth (Terry Crawford) saved Judith (Joan Bennett) from Jenny (Marie Wallace), who appeared to be insane. Rachel (Kathryn Leigh Scott) told Barnabas (Jonathan Frid) all that has happened to her so he went to the tower room to investigate. Beth and Judith had cleaned it by the time Barnabas got to it. He only found a doll's head that looked beaten and abused.
