As previously reported, actor Jason Thompson has chosen to leave his role as Dr. Patrick Drake on ABC soap opera General Hospital. The actor has finally spoken out about his exit, in a post Friday on Instagram.

"I have made the difficult decision to bid farewell to a character I've loved playing for over 10 years," Thompson wrote. "It was not an easy decision but I feel like it's time to hang up Dr. Patrick Drake's white coat and scrubs. I want to thank Frank Valentini, Vicki Dummer and Paul Lee for their support and appreciate their understanding. To everyone at ABC, the General Hospital crew, producers, writers, directors, my beloved cast mates and those in my home away from home, the make-up room, I can't possibly begin to tell you what you mean to me."

Thompson also thanked viewers for their support.

"Most importantly, I would like to thank the fans," he added. "General Hospital changed my life and I have to thank you for that. I am forever grateful for your love and support and for embracing me and this character for all these years. I mean these words from the bottom of my heart: GH is family to me, and I will miss you all dearly."

Thompson's longtime GH co-star Kimberly McCullough will be returning as Patrick's ex-wife, Robin Scorpio Drake, in November.

"There is some really cool stuff planned for Robin," McCullough told Soap Opera Digest. "It's a race against time and a trio is formed in a desperate attempt to help save a life that hangs in the balance, but that’s all you’re going to get out of me."
