'The Young and the Restless' Casts New Adam Newman

The Young and the Restless has finally cast its new Adam Newman, and they have hit a home run.

Justin Hartley knocked out the competition to land the role of Adam on
The Young and the Restless.
Mistresses actor Justin Hartley has nabbed the much-discussed role, according to TVGuide.com. He replaces Michael Muhney, who was fired from the soap last December and aired for the last time on January 30.

"I'm so pumped about joining Y&R — I watch it all the time and can't wait to get in there and get my hands dirty!" says Hartley, whose credits include Passions, Smallville, Emily Owens, M.D. and Revenge. "I have great respect for daytime drama. I love the branding. I love the style. What can I say? I love good soap!"

Hartley's tortured portrayal of Patrick Osbourne in Revenge proved beyond a doubt he has the range necessary to play the multi-dimensional Adam on Y&R.

"It's all about story and character with me and I don't care if the job is on daytime or primetime or the web. Hey, give me a good character and someone to listen and I'll do my acting on a street corner."

Hartley says he met with Y&R exec producer Jill Farren Phelps and CBS Daytime chief Angelica McDaniel to talk about the Adam role and "came away feeling very excited. The powers that be are smart, lovely people with kind hearts. It'll be wonderful going to work knowing I'm really wanted. Y&R is the No. 1 show and the acting company is exceptional. There's no period of adjustment with these people and that's daunting. I don't just have to be fantastic, I have to be fantastic right now!"

Hartley will report for work at The Young and the Restless in late September and is scheduled to hit the air during November sweeps.

  1. Loved him on Revenge. I like this pick.

  2. Wow, not a lot of comments. I guess this is another recasting bust for Y&R. Not surprising.

  3. Excellent choice. Loved Justin since Passions.

  4. The only casting news I want to hear about for Y&R is a new executive producer and a new head writer. Y&R is in terrible creative shape and it has nothing to do with the onscreen talent.

Hartley looks too young for the role opposite Amelia Heinle's Victoria and Burgess Jenkins' Billy_ I find Jenkins Burgess horribly miscast_ I could see Hartley as Billy or even a new JT. As JT, he could've reunited with Victoria and mixed it up with Billy too.

I think Trevor St. John would have made an excellent Adam Newman.

    1. According to Nelson Branco, Jill Farren Phelps (Y&R's exec producer) quietly inked a new contract with the show about three weeks ago. So don't expect change on that front anytime soon.

  5. Adam's younger than Victoria or Nick, so I think JH's age is well suited. And he satisifes the "hunk" quotient, so a good choice. Probably the best casting Y&R has managed in ages (even though Muhney's performance will be tough to beat).

    1. I think Hartley's age is well-suited too, although after digesting this news for awhile, I was thinking the role he may have been even more appropriate for would have been Billy!

  6. Amazing news. Have been a fan of Justin's ever since his debut on Passions. Have followed his career from Smallville to Revenge. Hell, I even watched the first episode of Emily Owens just to see how Justin would do.

He certainly will bring a lot to the role of Adam He'll be a great addition to the cast. What is most curious to me is why is returning to daytime when his prime time career seems to be going very well.

    1. Re: the career move. .. I suppose Logan's comment about the *bonus perk* of it offering career stability -- in Los Angeles -- in order to be near his 10-year old daughter might be a reason.

  7. I would have suggested him a long time ago, but didn't think he'd return to daytime. .. Welcome back.

  9. Justin is far superior to the previous portrayal of Adam Newman. Muhney relied on an overuse of facial twitches and his narcissistic nature came through. The replacements for both Adam and Phyllis are the best casting done in decades for Y&R. Ever since they got rid of MM, and the cringeworthy Nina and Chloe, I love watching again. Now- if they would kill off Mod Squad Cricket and gagworthy Lily - the show would be perfect.
