Soap Springs Eternal: ALL MY CHILDREN, ONE LIFE TO LIVE and the sweetly human act of caring about fictional characters
"TV has gotten more sophisticated since daytime was popular, and we have gotten more sophisticated in our viewing habits, but deep concern for fictitious human beings is still a major part of the TV-watching experience. This is another thing that soap operas bequeathed us: intimate, long-term relationships with make-believe people. We may mock the soap-opera watcher for her bad taste, but we and our good taste spend an awful lot of time dissecting the psychology of Omar Little, imagining Carrie Mathison’s future, obsessing about Don Draper’s past. Soap operas remind me that I’m lucky TV has gotten better—not because I wouldn’t have watched and cared if it were bad, but because I would have watched and cared anyway. Lesser stories are still stories. In the heart of most snobs is also someone who just wants to know what happens next. I wish AMC and OLTL luck on their space flight."

CBS chief: Hard for THE GOOD WIFE to beat GAME OF THRONES at Emmys
“I don’t think we’re the bastard child of the entertainment business,” the CBS chief said, though later he seemed to sympathize with the overall point Greenblatt was making: “They’re competing against some phenomenal programs,” he said. “It’s hard to put THE GOOD WIFE up against GAME OF THRONES. It probably costs three times as much [to make and is given] three times as long to shoot. It’s a brilliant show and I love it as much as anyone. [But cable shows] get a lot more attention for a lot fewer numbers.”

Emmy Nominee Carrie Preston Poised to Return in Season 5 of THE GOOD WIFE
Fresh off her long-overdue Emmy nomination for playing Elsbeth Tascioni, Preston is nearing a deal to return to the CBS drama in Season 5. To date, she has appeared in nine episodes.

James LeGros joins REVENGE
LeGros, who most recently appeared on HBO's hit series GIRLS, is set to join the ABC sudser in the recurring role of Father Paul when it returns in September. Father Paul will be introduced to viewers after Emily (Emily VanCamp) seeks him out; he also has ties to the Grayson family...never a good thing in the Hamptons!

Jurnee Smollett joins PARENTHOOD
Smollett will play Heather Hall, a smart, feisty, up-and-coming political dynamo who Kristina hires to be her campaign manager (Kristina is running for local office, in case you didn’t hear).

This brings to seven the number of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS actors Katims has brought on to Parenthood. In addition to Smollett, Matt Lauria, Minka Kelly, Michael B. Jordan, Derek Phillips, Angela Rawna and Jeff Rosick have also appeared on the show.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Adds Lorraine Toussaint, Promotes Danielle Brooks
Toussaint will play Vee, a long-time street tough who ran her own drug business, recruiting children to serve as runners. She recurs on THE FOSTERS and plays Sharon's therapist in THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.

Lucille Ball Comedy Festival To Feature Fashion Show, Live Auction Saturday
The event will begin with a fashion show featuring items from the collection of Melody Thomas Scott, star of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and big Lucy fan.

GLEE's Mike O'Malley: Cory Monteith Was the "Real-Life Quarterback of That Set"
O'Malley, who plays Burt Hummel, the stepfather of Monteith's character Finn Hudson, recalled his time with Monteith, with whom he shared many scenes. "I think I had what was probably the toughest scene I've ever acted in my career as an actor opposite him, when I had to throw Finn out of the house for a slur that he used," O'Malley said. "It was remarkable to me, when we're shooting that scene over and over again, the depth of emotion he was able to portray, the sorrow, the shame."

"He was the fictional quarterback on that show and the very real quarterback on that set," he continued. "He was an incredibly warm guy, a guy who was welcoming to everyone who came on that show, from the beginning through the new folks who came on this past year. He was a very hard-working actor. I loved working with him. He was a great guy. I miss him very much."

The scoop on 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY from executive producer Howard Gordon
"We’re going to take advantage of the time. The story will be twelve hours over a day, but we’ll take advantage of the fact that we can go from seven o’clock to nine o’clock. We start in January, and we’re going through May, and we start airing in April."

Can Web Series Creators Turn Their Work Into a Career?
When Netflix is a leading Emmy contender it looks like TV has been completely disrupted.

Thanks to subscribers, Netflix is already HBO. It can pull together generously budgeted dramas, something most other networks like YouTube, who rely on advertisers, don't have the money to do.

But as multiple critics and scholars have pointed out, Netflix's dominance in top categories overshadows the truly innovative work of short-format producers. The television Academy has honored web series for years but with minimal promotion. The bright young talents working in the indie-friendly format have been largely ignored by Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and the other big networks in their original programming strategies.
