Today in Soap Opera History (July 6)

On this date in...

1961: Future DAYS OF OUR LIVES star Suzanne Rogers made her first appearance as a Radio City Rockette at age 17.

1965: On ANOTHER WORLD, Pat (Susan Trustman) was worried she was the cause of Lee's (Gaye Huston) illness.

1966: On THE GUIDING LIGHT, Peggy (Fran Myers) and Johnny continued to face opposition to their dating.

1981: On THE EDGE OF NIGHT, April (Terry Davis) received an unexpected visit from Raven (Sharon Gabet).

1982: Actor Russell Thorson died at age 75. His soap roles included William Kennerly on PEYTON PLACE and Dr. Donald White on DAYS OF OUR LIVES.

1984: On DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Melissa (Lisa Trusel) felt guilty after Pete (Michael Leon) accidentally shot her father, Mickey (John Clarke).

1987: Anne Heche debuted as Vicky Hudson in ANOTHER WORLD. Michael took over for Las Vegas when he found out Vicky was in trouble. This was a Monday episode. Because the networks covered the Oliver North testimony at the Iran-Contra hearings during the daytime, ANOTHER WORLD was pre-empted after this episode until Thursday, July 16. Heche did not air again until July 17.

1998: On DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Vivian (Louise Sorel) tried to get the square dance going at the 4th of July picnic.

2004: On THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, after an intervention held by friends and family to get her to stop drinking has failed, Katherine (Jeanne Cooper) was left alone in her mansion and experienced "ghostly" visits from her deceased husband, Rex Sterling (Quinn Redeker), and her beloved "grandson," Phillip Chancellor III (Thom Bierdz).

Viewers would learn five years later that Phillip wasn't dead at all. He was alive, gay, and living in Australia.

Thanks to FoxCrane for sending in this item.

2005: GENERAL HOSPITAL star Kelly Monaco won the Mirror Ball trophy on the first season of DANCING WITH THE STARS.

2012: The New York Post broke the story that recently canceled ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE would continue on the web. ABC confirmed it with a press release the next day. Both shows finally premiered via The OnLine Network (TOLN) on April 29, 2013.

  1. James Kiberd was also on Another World as Dustin Trent in early 1989.
