Today in Soap Opera History (January 22)

On this date in...

1958: On THE EDGE OF NIGHT, Toni was kidnapped by one of Fitzsimmons' goons.

1973: On ANOTHER WORLD, Steve (George Reinholt) begged Mary and Jim not to take Alice's things away as it would remove the last traces of her presence in his house. Over dinner, Alice told Eliot she was no longer in love with Steve and that he never really cared about her.

1973: Roe v. Wade, is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion, was decided and announced during "breaking news" which interrupted daytime programming, including CBS soap LOVE OF LIFE.  The Court ruled 7–2 that a right to privacy under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment extended to a woman's decision to have an abortion, but that right must be balanced against the state's two legitimate interests in regulating abortions: protecting prenatal life and protecting women's health.  Later that day it was revealed on the CBS EVENING NEWS with Walter Cronkie that former President Lyndon B. Johnson had died.

1986: On DYNASTY, Krystle had a vicious fight with Rita, her look-a-like. Linda Evans fights with herself in the clip below:

1993: Alison Sweeney debuted as Sami Brady in DAYS OF OUR LIVES.

2007: Popular Televisa novela DESTILANDO AMOR premiered.

2008: Actor Heath Ledger died at age 28.  He starred in Australian soap opera HOME AND AWAY early in his career playing Scott Irwin.  He also starred as gay cyclist Snowy Bowles in SWEAT.

2010: Longtime ALL MY CHILDREN star James Mitchell died at age 89. He joined the cast of AMC in 1979 as Palmer Cortlandt.
