GENERAL HOSPITAL: Are Vampires Returning To Port Charles? (Spoilers)

Soap opera crossovers have always existed in a universe where actors sometimes play the same character on two different series, while other times an actor moves from one show to another as a new character. In the case of GENERAL HOSPITAL, its 1997-2003 spinoff PORT CHARLES and ONE LIFE TO LIVE, actors are doing both. PORT CHARLES star Lynn Herring returned to GH in December and, according to a new story by TV Guide Magazine, the soap is going to address the fact that a lot of people in town look awfully familiar to Lucy Coe from her PC days.

On Monday, January 14, Lucy will drop by Kelly's Diner for some chow and spot John McBain, the good-guy cop that moved from ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Llanview played by Michael Easton, who previously played Caleb on PORT CHARLES.

[SPOILER ALERT ahead]

"She completely freaks and screams, "Caleb!" says head writer Ron Carlivati. "Later Kelly's character, Sam (Kelly Monaco; ex-Livvie, PORT CHARLES), comes out of the ladies room and Lucy think it's Livvie." Lucy goes into full slayer mode and stabs John. He's rushed to the hospital. She ends up in the slammer.

"Our universes are colliding but this is no quick gimmick," Carlivati says. "This will kick off a nice little mystery story: Is Lucy crazy or is there something very real going on here? And, if she's crazy, why do John and Sam feel like they've met before?"

Ian Buchanan's Duke Lavery will get involved as well (Buchanan played vampire king Joshua Temple on PORT CHARLES).

Whether you were a fan of PORT CHARLES or not, we want to hear your thoughts in our Comments section below. Tell us what you think of this idea.

  1. Please, GH, do not bring vampires on to the show. Ghosts and psychics are one thing. But this is just going too far.

    1. I totally enjoyed the supernatural spin.I get sick of seeing the same stories just played by different actor's and let's face it.we don't watch soaps for realism.it's just fun.thanks fir bringing it back.love Caleb.

  2. Have fans been asking for vampires on GH or a resolution of PC stories? I bet it's all camp but I don't care for vampires on daytime soaps other than Dark Shadows. Ron C loves doppelgangers and twins and I hope it doesn't devolve into that.

  3. I bet Lucy will think the whole vampire story was a dream. It totally ruined PC, when they did this.

  4. I'm keeping an open mind until I see it although I was okay just ignoring the fact that PC's Port Charles didn't seem to exist on GH. GH tends to be fun these days so it may not seem as out of place as it reads to some.

I have long complained that THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL cross some actors over as the same characters and others as brand new characters. For example, Eileen Davidson played Ashley Abbott on both shows, but her former Y&R co-stars Don Diamont and Heather Tom are playing different characters on B&B. But I never wanted a whole backstory invented around it, just some consistency (one or the other). Since I loved John McCook as Lance on Y&R so much I especially hated when he came to Genoa City as Eric Forrester.

  5. I AM BEYOND EXCITED FOR THIS! I've been saying that they should bring Kevin back as Sam's never identified dad which would explain the fact that she looks exactly like Livvie. That and I want Lucy and Doc together again!

  6. I was never a fan of the vampire stories on PC, and stopped watching the show at that point. I can see the humor of the scene described above, but I have no interest in it as an ongoing storyline.

  7. Ridiculous idea and "inside jokes" destroy integrity/credibility...something GH has been so carefully working (successfully) to reestablish. Vampires, possessed heroines, talking dolls and werewolves have no place on GH now that it's finally starting to get back on its feet. Save the supernatural for a different show.

Plus: Monaco and Easton are ACTORS. They don't need to be forever locked into long-gone character, IMO. If the chemistry is still there, it will come out through their new portrayals. Move forward, not back! Just having all these vets around is enough of a nod to the past/history.

  8. Let's not and say we did ... unless it comes in the form of a short-lived "nightmare" for one of the characters.

  9. i am excited when port charles first did the vampire story lines there wasnt much vampire stories out there, now there is a ton. I was a huge fan then watched it everyday and even watched the re runs on soap net. It would be interesting to see how they would tie those story lines into the current ones. Cant wait

  10. I certainly can do without it. I'd rather real stories

  11. We need to keep in mind that 'some' (supposed)
soap fans will want the double portrayal of
actors (Easton, Monaco & Buchanan) to be
addressed, and if not, to hell with the show.

Now, personally, I don't feel that way. But, I
do believe in Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini
to handle this situation with a 'wink-wink' by
creating a short-lived storyline for those
    involved.

Personally, I'm glad (thrilled, actually) to see
the GH I loved returning in capable hands.

Can't we (at least) agree that it's better NOW
than it was 18 months ago?

  12. I think its a great idea...I loved port charles so much that I actually cried when it went off the air. Can't wait to see how this all pans out because I never could grasp why no one in other parts of port charles (general hospital) seem so oblivious as to not realize there are vampires roaming the streets. GREAT GREAT GREAT IDEA, WOO HOO!!!

  14. I will not watch GH anymore if they go the twilight route.... not everyone who watches is 15 yrs old have respect for the vet actors as well as the vet audience!!!! The ratings sky rocketed not due to Sonny, Jason story lines they gave time back to core history families and story lines wake the F*ck up frank Valenti and Ron Cavalarti you are writing for adults not Dr Suess!!

  15. if its that lucy is crazy and its just a little "wink wink" moment then i like it but if its going to be a real story line then please no, you ruined perfectly good characters on PC with that crap.

  17. Wow, look at all the negative comments. No wonder soap operas are a dying medium if the viewers want mundane repeats instead of thinking outside of the box. So, no supernatural elements, unless it's their hokey religion or bullshit New Age garbage about psychics and ghosts? I'm sitting through nonsense about rigged DNA testing or whatever, but I'm not complaining, because I'm learning to like it on a show I'm /choosing/ to watch. Plus which, I've yet to hear any of these whining little girls communicate effectively.

  18. Addendum: I'd hate to listen to you people sit through one episode of My Little Pony.

  19. Some say real life is better but none of this is real life. I mean really people. How many times have u seen all of this happen in ur life. I hope they do bring vampires back. And its not just vets that watch I watched this with my mom for years and I'm 30 now still watching. I may not be 80 but not a teen either and still would like to see them bring vampires back.

  23. Please do not go the vampire route. I stopped watching PC because of it. We are only left with GH and I am so happy to see a few of the other soap actors come over. It is great that they addressing the elephant in the room for those who did watch both PC and GH but don't delve too deep into it please! I am much more interested in seeing Connie/Kate get her crap together, Maxie needs to fess up, love the Michael/AJ twist. Get Sabrina out of her dole drums, she is a Hottie and get Robin back. Find more or the teens/early 20 charicters and how about Elizabeth. Can she ever catch a break? Bring some hottie on for her.

  24. I despise this vampire storyline and hope it will pass quickly before it ruins the only story I still watch.

  25. Loving the vampire storyline!!! I'm hoping Maxie fess up, not liking the Britt, Patrick thing...where's Robin?

  26. I watch True Blood, Human, and The Vampire. That is were they belong or Maybe they could done it with Passions because that had a supernatural element. This is taking it too far.

  30. I started watching GH 10 years ago, stopped and begun about a year ago and I couldn't be more thrilled with the storylines. It has been nostalgic to see 'old' characters return as well as new ones incorporated from other soaps. I was skeptical about the vampire storyline because when you watch soaps you fall into the reality of that world. The introduction of vampires challenges the believability thus upsetting a lots of viewers. Let's just see where they go with this. The aspect of vampires brings longevity to characters lifespan, crazy sex scenes, and ties to a hospital full of sustainable blood bags. Maybe this is exactly what GH needs (aside from running episodes at night)

  31. I like the mystery vampire story line. Has made the show exciting since Jason has gone. Keep it for a while.

  32. I was a fan of PC, and very upset when it went off the air. I am not a GH viewer, but was very excited when I happened to catch Allison and Lucy one day while my mom was watching it. Now I find myself recording GH and fast forwarding to the 'PC' parts!

  33. I'm thrilled and so are many of my friends who are fans. The question is will Port Charles air at some point (perhaps on the SOAP channel?) for fans to catch up on what happened back then - at least the basics of this absolutely wonderful vampire storyline ????
