Today in Soap Opera History (September 26)

On this date in...

1962: THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES premiered, 50 years ago today.  On March 6, 1938, the show aired an episode titled "The Soap Opera." The Campletts thought Rex Goodbody, a character on A JOURNEY TO MISERY, was a real person and set out to help him.

One of the many guest stars during the show's hugely successful run was Mike Minor, who went onto multiple daytime soap opera roles including Brandon Kingsley in ALL MY CHILDREN.  Meredith MacRae played Billie Jo Bradley on the show, a character that was part of spin-off PETTICOAT JUNCTION.  She went on to play Estelle Cunningham in RITUALS.

1967: On ANOTHER WORLD, Missy (Carol Roux) suffered an oedema, fluid retention in pressing against her brain.

1986: Actor Hugh Franklin died at age 70.   His soap roles included Charles Tyler Sr. in ALL MY CHILDREN, Ralph Brown in AS THE WORLD TURNS, Ed Bridgeman in LOVE OF LIFE, Fred McNeill in YOUNG DOCTOR MALONE and Richard Garner in DARK SHADOWS.

1986: On DALLAS, Pam awakened from a dream to find that Bobby is really alive and everything that happened in the previous year was just her dream world.



1993: Actor Biff Warren died at age 37. He played Mark Lewis in AS THE WORLD TURNS.

1995: During an emotional confrontation with Justine, Rachel, and Ryan on ANOTHER WORLD, Grant (Mark Pinter) shot Ryan (Paul Michael Valley) in the back.



1995: On ALL MY CHILDREN, Brooke told Adam she is going to move into the shelter.



1997: On DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Jack (played by Mark Valley) started taking a shower, but by the time he was finished, the role was being played by Steve Wilder.



2000: Actor Richard Mulligan, who played Burt Campbell in SOAP, died at age 67.

2010: Titanic actress Gloria Stuart died at age 100. She played Catherine in GENERAL HOSPITAL.

2011: Deidre Hall, Drake Hogestyn, Austin Peck and Christie Clark returned to DAYS OF OUR LIVES as Marlena, John, Austin and Carrie.

  1. Can't believe Hugh Franklin was only 70 when he died. So young by today's standards. I loved him as the long-suffering Charles Tyler on AMC.

  2. Roger, stop making me cry. First, Jennifer Landon and Andy Williams on ATWT (Triple set of tears there), and then Hugh Franklin, husband of my favourite writer, Madeleine L'Engle (gone herself now) Double tears. Where's my Kleenex?
