CW Picks Up CARRIE DIARIES, ARROW, CULT, FIRST CUT, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Pilots; GOSSIP GIRL, HART OF DIXIE, NIKITA Renewed

The CW has picked up five pilots to series: CARRIE DIARIES, ARROW, CULT, FIRST CUT and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

The network's upfront presentation is on May 17 and its new president Mark Pedowitz is looking to broaden the CW's appeal.

The five new shows will join the 2012-13 schedule along the renewed scripted series NIKITA, 90210, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, GOSSIP GIRL, HART OF DIXIE and SUPERNATURAL. THE SECRET CIRCLE and RINGER were canceled.

Below is a summary and list of stars for each of the new projects:

ARROW
Based on the DC Comics title, published by DC Entertainment, this hourlong drama is a modern retelling of the legendary DC Comics character Green Arrow (Stephen Amell).
Cast: Paul Blackthorne, Jamey Sheridan, David Ramsey, Colin Donnell, Katie Cassidy and Willa Holland

THE CARRIE DIARIES
It's Sex and the City for the younger set. The soapy CW drama, based on the City prequel by Candace Bushnell, centers on a young, Manhattan-based Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) who comes of age in the 1980s.
Cast: AnnaSophia Robb, Austin Butler, Brendan Dooling, Freema Agyeman, Stefania Owen, Katie Findlay, Ellen Wong, Matt Letscher and Chloe Bridges

CULT
The drama revolves around an inquisitive young female production assistant (Jessica Lucas) on a wildly popular television series, who joins a journalist blogger (Matt Davis) in investigating the show's rabid fans. Together, the duo finds the fans might be re-creating crime scenes from the show in their real lives -- behavior that has lead to a rash of disappearances and a likely murder.
Cast: Jessica Lucas, Matt Davis, Alona Tal and Robert Knepper

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Loosely based on the CBS series of the same name from the 1980s, this is a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist.
Smallville's Kristin Kreuk is the Beauty to Jay Ryan's Beast.
Cast: Austin Basis, Nicole Gale Anderson, Nina Lisandrello, Max Brown and Brian White

FIRST CUT
The medical drama centers on a newly minted doctor (Mamie Gummer) discovers that, sadly and comically, life at the hospital where she works is no different than high school.
Cast: Mamie Gummer, Justin Hartley, Michael Rady, Jack Coleman, Kelly J. McCreary, Aja Naomi King and Necar Zadegan

  1. Gossip Girl's time has come, but at least The CW is doing the right thing by giving it a shortened 11-episode wrap.

  2. I'm glad they gave Hart of Dixie another chance to grow. The ratings for these shows, especially Gossip Girl are shockingly low. They must make a lot of money off merchandise and other things.

  3. Given that these shows on The CW seem to appeal to the younger crowd (12-34), it would be interesting to know what kind of numbers they pull in online viewing.

I know a couple of months ago Variety reported on how The CW was shortening the time delay between broadcast and website avaiability in an attempt to lure viewers away from watching the shows on pirate websites, but no numbers were included.
