Alicia Minshew has good fitness in her genes
"No. 1, I was raised with it. My mom is a Pilates instructor today in her 60s in Stuart. Exercise makes me feel good and centered, makes me feel healthy. Exercise is a way to relieve stress and feel good. And being a woman, you want to keep your butt tight, arms lean. You want to look good.

"As I got older, [I realized] the health reasons: to maintain a healthy heart. My grandmother in Stuart is 100 years old and she does her recumbent bike every day.

"I've always been a skinny kid; I remember my mom giving me milkshakes [to gain weight]. I still struggle to keep weight on. I do weight training to give muscle on top of my small frame, so I don't look too skinny and unhealthy."

Pam St Clement's parting shot for EASTENDERS: "Too violent and is in danger of forgetting their roots"
"I permanently bang on to the management here about how, if you pitched an idea now about an elderly man whose daughter was getting married, but he couldn't afford the wedding money so he raids the Christmas club box, they would laugh you out of the room."

NEWS ROUNDUP: Ethan Wayne, Ted King, Michael Easton, HELL ON WHEELS Renewed

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: Former BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL star Ethan Wayne (ex-Storm)
He's president of John Wayne Enterprises, the company that manages John Wayne's image and the merchandising that goes along with it, from Wayne-inspired Western wear to small-batch Bourbon and organic beef jerky.

He also heads the John Wayne Cancer Foundation

John Wayne recovered from having lung cancer in the 1960s, but died in 1979 from stomach cancer. Before he passed, he decided to help others suffering from the disease.

The foundation funds awareness programs, support groups, cancer research, trains oncologists through the John Wayne Cancer Institute.

"In my opinion, my father's greatest legacy is helping people who are sick," Ethan Wayne said.

Wayne also hasn't left Hollywood completely. He's currently writing a screenplay.

"I am concentrating on this, though I am working," he said. "It's a human story about choices that we make when we're young and how they affect us when we get older ... the emotional consequences of turning right or left. It's set around a life that's somewhat adventurous."

Is Ted King returning to GENERAL HOSPITAL... With Michael Easton in tow?
Word is that both actors have a tentative start date set for late January. It's unclear whether King will return as an Alcazar brother, or his OLTL role. And while this would also be a return trip to Port Charles for Easton, who played vampire Caleb on the GH spinoff PORT CHARLES opposite Kelly Monaco's Livvie, one source reports that he'll likely be appearing as his Llanview Police detective alter ego.

AMC Renews HELL ON WHEELS For Season 2

NEWS ROUNDUP: Jonathan Jackson, Betty White, Buffy Movie, Jon Tenney, Mario Batali

GENERAL HOSPITAL's Jonathan Jackson on telling love stories and maintaining character integrity
"It's difficult to tell love stories in a day in and day out medium. It can easily become a little bit mundane," Jackson says. "I think there's a way around that, but it's not easy. The answer can't be to always have one of the two people betray the other one and have the whole thing fall apart because the characters end up compromising everything about themselves. There has to be another way to have drama without the characters themselves doing that to themselves or doing that to each other. That would be the challenge: how do you create drama and suspense nuances but maintain the integrity of the characters? That's really difficult to do."

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ movie looking for new writer

INTERVIEW: BUFFY, ANGEL & GREEK Alum Charisma Carpenter is THE LYING GAME's Rebecca Anne Sewell

Just when we thought - maybe - we were about to figure it all out, THE LYING GAME has upped the ante! We'll soon meet Char's aunt, Rebecca Anne Sewell, who has returned to town after years of being estranged from her family. Now she's a woman of means, full of secrets, played by Charisma Carpenter.

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Charisma Carpenter lived there until the age of fifteen, when her family moved to Mexico and later to San Diego. In San Diego, she attended the School of Creative and Performing Arts and was a cheerleader for the San Diego Chargers.

In 1992, Carpenter moved to Los Angeles. After being discovered by a commercial agent, and appearing in more than 20 commercials, her career in front of the camera began. After just two years in LA, Carpenter made her television debut in an episode of BAYWATCH, which caught the attention of MALIBU SHORES creator Aaron Spelling.

Carpenter was cast as series regular, Ashley Green, in MALIBU SHORES. The series ran for only one season, but Carpenter caught the attention of both viewers and series creators. Subsequently, she was cast in a number of series through the late 90s and into the mid 2000s including: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL and VERONICA MARS.

It is through Carpenter’s portrayal of the character, Cordelia Chase, for seven years on the WB's hit show ANGEL, that she is most famously recognized. Carpenter originated the role of Cordelia Chase in Joss Whedon's popular show BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and when the spin off ANGEL occurred in 1999, Carpenter’s character moved to the new show.

We Love Soaps recently enjoyed the opportunity to speak with Charisma. Below, you can read a complete, unedited transcript of the interview.

FLASHBACK: Irna Phillips Essay On The Soap Opera

The "Queen of the Soap Opera" Irna Phillips died 38 years ago today. In honor of the legendary creator of so many beloved radio and television serials, below is an excerpt from an essay she wrote on the genre a year before her death.

The modern soap opera is a living thing. It has a pace and pulse and, it sometimes seems, a will of its own. In AS THE WORLD TURNS, for example, the Hughes family is so well established in my mind and the minds of its audience that the family's behavior and responses are largely dictated by what has gone on before. The Hughes family believes in certain values, and it would be uncharacteristic - that is, dishonest - to tamper with those believes in the story. Contrary to popular opinion, the writer of a daytime serial cannot play God, manipulating characters as if they were puppets. The writer who hopes to have a successful series must think of characters as flesh-and-blood entities.

B&B Exec Producer/Writer Brad Bell Among Investors Purchasing Chicago Sun-Times

A local investment group is acquiring the media company that includes the Chicago Sun-Times, taking over from owners who purchased it out of bankruptcy under the direction of the late James Tyree.

The buyers include Michael Ferro Jr., chairman of Merrick Ventures LLC, a private equity firm that deals with technology companies. Ferro, who will serve as chairman, is bringing in media executive Timothy Knight to run the company as chief executive and as an investor.

Also among the investors is Bradley Phillip Bell, president of Bell-Phillip Television Productions, which produces THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. He is the son of Chicago TV pioneer Lee Phillip Bell who had a long-running talk show on WBBM-TV.

To accomplish the deal, the investors created a new company with the pun-laden name Wrapports LLC. Knight said the name refers to a mix of old media — the “wrapping” of a newspaper — with the rapport promised by new technology. He said the company will buy other ventures or launch its own tech startups.

OPEN LETTER: Ellen Holly Reveals The True Story Of Her Time At ONE LIFE TO LIVE

Legendary actress Ellen Holly has published "An Open Letter to the Fans and Historians of ONE LIFE TO LIVE". Holly was an original cast member of ONE LIFE in 1968 and was a fan favorite immediately and throughout her run which ended in 1985. She was not the first black actor on contract with a daytime soap but was certainly the first black star of daytime and paved the way for future stars like Debbi Morgan, Darnell Williams, Kristoff St. John, Victoria Rowell, Tamara Tunie and others.

For any longtime fan of daytime television, the lack of minority characters onscreen has been obvious. As the minority population of the United States has grown in the past 20 years, the volume of minority characters on soaps has actually decreased. Why is this?

Stars like Rowell have spoken out in interviews (and on Twitter) about the lack of diversity not only in front of the camera but behind the scenes as well. What has been missing was tangible evidence, numbers, that paint a clearer picture that can not be dismissed as sour grapes.

Hall paints a vivid picture of how she was hired, what her salary was compared to the other "stars" of ONE LIFE, what really happened when she was fired from the soap, and the timeline of when she found out damning information which lead to her writing this new open letter.

Below are a few of the more interesting quotes:

Using Soap Operas, Cooking Classes To Fight Diabetes
When researchers tried to introduce a healthier diet and lifestyle to a group of adults at risk for developing diabetes in Lawrence, Massachusetts, a primarily low-income city that’s 60% Latino, and where only about half the population is fluent in English, they tried to meet people just where they were.

That meant screening a “telenovela,” a Spanish soap opera, about a diabetic mom named Martha and her at-risk daughter Sandra, that detailed the fears and challenges of the disease while introducing healthier food choices and busting pervasive misconceptions.

Anne Marie Howard: Crying Teeth
"I'm an actress, and when we met I was playing Nicole Love on the soap opera, ANOTHER WORLD. During our first few months together, my contract ended and a new job opportunity came up that I couldn't refuse. I would be taking over the role of Kimberly Brady-Donovan on DAYS OF OUR LIVES. Only this NBC series taped in Burbank, California. Peter and I dated for three months before I left for the west coast. It was a whirlwind romance, with endless bottles of Clos du Bois Chardonnay and expensive dinners at the best restaurants. He asked me to marry him during one of these meals, in-between our entrées and dessert. We had a lot of fun, flying back and forth, planning our wedding. Six months after we met, we were married at one of our favorite restaurants in Manhattan."

TV Guide Network Becomes More 'Network,' Less Guide
The cable network, which started as scrolling TV listings “barker” channel, Prevue Channel, has gradually been reformatting itself to become a “full-screen” entertainment TV network that eschews its TV listings heritage in favor of conventional programming. Based on its negotiations with cable and satellite operators, more than 75% of TV Guide Network’s total distribution (80 million households) will be carrying the full-screen version of the channel, dropping its listings scroll altogether, by the end of this year.

Christmas Comes Early! Classic AS THE WORLD TURNS Episode From 1982 Now Streaming

SoapClassics is now streaming a classic AS THE WORLD TURNS Christmas episode from 1982 in which David and Ellen Stewart get remarried. Longtime fans will recall what a rough year the couple had before their reunion.

I chose this episode because David and Ellen are such an iconic ATWT couple and we haven't been able to feature them properly on the first two DVD sets. Ellen is one of the original characters of the show and David joined a few years later. Their complicated romance, along with their children, drove story for years.

It also has an old school ATWT feel, so for those fans who really want to see the classics this is a nod to a couple (and family) that was there for decades. Plus, you get hot couple Tom and Margo and a very young Barbara and James. And, as far as I know, this episode isn't on YouTube or any other video sharing website. I really enjoyed watching it and hope you do too.

Visit SoapClassics.com to watch the episode and, if you haven't already, order one (or both) of the DVD collections while you are there!
