EXCLUSIVE: Soap Classics To Release GUIDING LIGHT 20-Episode 4-Disc DVD In Mid-January

In our interview with Soap Classics President Mark Yates back in October, he revealed that a GUIDING LIGHT DVD would be release in the first quarter of 2012. We can now confirm that release is happening, and in mid-January!

The "Classics" DVD will follow a similar format as the AS THE WORLD TURNS Classics DVD (on sale now) with four discs with five episodes each.

We can't spoil all the episodes on the disc just yet but fans of Santo Domingo, the Bauer family, personality disorders, fire trucks, the magic of Nick, ex-husbands, singing med students, drunken stepfathers and Irna Phillips will be happy. Seriously, we tried to include as many different characters as possible on the set which covers almost a 30 year span.

We reveal a couple of our favorite episodes on the DVD below:

* Quint and Nola's wedding. How could Nola's entire family leave her at home with no ride to the church on her wedding day? Never fear, the ingenious Nola found a ride thanks to the Springfield Fire Department. And the Four Musketeers had just finished their prom and were gearing up for a hot summer.

* Roger Thorpe's "death" in Santo Domingo. As Bert Bauer prays to God to keep her sons, Ed and Mike, safe from harm, Roger is facing his last hours on earth. Or so we would think at the time. Alan and Hope were a month from their wedding day. Any episode with Charita Bauer, Barbara Berjer, Maureen Garrett, Christopher Bernau, Michael Zaslow, Don Stewart and Mart Hulswit is heaven to me.

And remember, 2012 will be "The Year of the Soap."

  7. This made my morning, thank you Roger, now are going have us "Lighters" chime in about episodes. PLEASE nothing from the Ellen Wheeler period!

  8. Can't wait for this! You've hinted at the best storylines on GL... seriously... are we there yet??? LOL

  9. Agree... nothing with Ellen Wheeler presiding, please.

  10. And nothing from the John Conboy/Ellen Weston era either! Honestly, anything prior to Pam Long's involvement would be my preference. GL lost it's heart and soul with her - THE BAUERS!

  11. RW, one thing I noticed watching old episodes from early Pam Long was a mixture of Bauers (before Mike and Hillary disappeared forever). I didn't even remember Reva spending time with Mike.

  12. As they did with ATWT coverage of Luke/Noah on their collection of discs, I sincerely hope the GL discs include something of Olivia/Natalia, like the wonderful confessions around the wedding scenes (April 2009). That was something fabulous!

  15. We'll release all the episodes as soon as we can. It's "in the can" so to speak. Just remember if this does well there will be more. And someday we can buy this things online. I tried to include as many characters and eras and favorites as possible with the limitation of 20 episodes from 30 years! Glad to see everyone's excitement. I went for themes over time since this was a classics disc like with ATWT we saw Lily and Holden as teenagers, then in the 20s getting married then in their 30s dealing with their own teenagers. It's cool to see this lifespan on a daytime soap you can't get anywhere else.

One thing I noticed in re-watching some of my favorite "moments" from the past was that the overall episodes maybe weren't as solid as I remembered in my mind because of that moment. But I think all of these shows have a great cross section of stories and characters. Like the Quola wedding also features a separate story involving the Four Musketeers. And the Roger Santo Domingo episode features a lot of action back in Springfield like Alan and Hope, Bert, Tim, Kelly, etc.

  16. You got include Wendy M. as Dinah, she was the one that put Dinah on map. Something to consider for future dvd is "side characters" that are beloved and fans remember on P&G's soaps. P&G always did an amazing job with side characters "Harriet w\Shannon", Jane w\Lucinda, ATWT, GL Vera\Alex, Ginger & Donna w\Jenna, Wanda w\Lewis' etc. So the next stop oin the new year are the online episodes to watch what P&G did with AOL a few years ago. Hell I watch all P&G's soaps and get much better story compared to BS they are trying to peddle today.

  21. This is wonderful news Roger. I'm hoping the eps of when the fishing trip picture is stolen from Tony's bar will be included, but even if it's not, I'm hopeful when they put these old shows on Line, we'll be able to see everything from the early 1980's.

  22. Since the holiday is over it would be great for summer to have special dvd on Bauer BBQ, it was staple.

  23. Roger, you have one of the best jobs I could think of--getting to watch almost any episode of Guiding Light! I'm sure this collection you've put together will be a huge success. Thanks!

  24. Kevin, in screening eps I saw Annabelle a lot (they were always on for a while) and had forgotten she was Beth's teacher.

Sage, watching classic soaps is always fun. :)

  25. i hope there is more than one Bauer bbq featured! my favorite!!! :) and thanks again :)

  26. Roger, would you able to write a post about your experiences selecting these episodes?I'm so curious about the process such as whether you were sent a stack of tapes or had to go to the archives, how many episodes you watched and really anything you'd be willing to share. It sounds like every soap opera fan dream! :-)

  27. Roger, there isn't a way to post 1 holiday episode of GL along with ATWT to get the people stoked for dvd coming out? As a possible promotion? Just thinking.....

  28. Roger, thanks for mentioning Annabelle. To me, there were two BIG stories: the fishing trip mystery of 1983 and the haunted cottage story of 1984. If you can watch these eps, the one that I really want to see is the one where the picture is stolen. I never caught the end of that show, but I believe Annabelle had a dream..with drops of blood appearing on the girl's white dress..my housekeeper told me how it ended...with all you see is the picture moving by itself at the end. Hope you got to catch that show, whcih would have been program 9196, airdate: July 13, 1983. Say many wonderful memories...:)

  29. YES Kevin I remember that story because involved the seniors, HB, Henry, Tony's dad Reardon, Brandon, and Bill Bauer or something? The other one was Susan Piper was very good.

  30. Roger, please... include an episode with the "Hold on to Love" opening with the lighthouse... I do love so much that opening (and closing)! :-)

  31. I can’t wait for the GL release! I have the other two DVDs and hope there will be many more of ATWT to come. These are MY two soaps, so I’ll buy anything that gets released!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am SO happy!!!!

  32. I want to see Mart Hulswit, The original Ed Bauer. Mike Bauer, brain freeze, can't think of his name.Don Stewart maybe. Loved the man as Mike. I watched the show in the 70's and 80's Loved it Show Nola and Quent, how about some of the row boat scenes with hal Munson from ATWTs. GL was a great show until P.L. screwed it up.
Do your best we can only hope to see some of the stories we loved.
I have the two from ATWTS and am very pleased with them. The quality is great, and some of the scenes are fine. can't please everyone all the time.
I liked roger with Peggy before Holly ruined that. But I also would like to see some Chris Berneau. he was one actor who could make you want to smack him but I never hated him completely. Even when he turned young Philip against Mike. Want to also see the reunion of beth and Philip.
