THE CHEW producer speak out about ABC soap cancellations
Gordon Elliot, executive producer of The Chew, reasons that since there are plans for both ALL MY CHILDREN and also-ending soap ONE LIFE TO LIVE to continue online, why can't viewers watch it all, guilt-free? "We were asked to join the daytime lineup because daytime tastes have changed," Elliott told reporters Sunday during ABC's fall TV previews. Soap audiences have been in steady decline for several years, and in April, ABC announced it was ending both ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE. (They go off the air in September and January, respectively.) In July, production company Prospect Park said it was attempting to resurrect both series online, as well as on other platforms. Viewers "can have their cake and eat it too," Elliot said.
Late on during the same TCA panel, Charles Pratt Jr., executive producer of the new ABC Family show THE LYING GAME, had an interesting take on that.
Millions of young folks, he said, lap up the prime-time soap-style shows on ABC Family and other networks catering to "millennials," viewers 12 to 34.

Felicity Huffman hopes she doesn't end up in "acting jail" after DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES
Huffman jokes she may leave acting altogether once the series wraps up. "Some people say I'm crazy," she says, 'but you go into acting jail at the end of these things, because it's hard for people to see you as anything else but Lynette Scavo or whatever it is, so I think it's unwise to kind of look at the carnage of past television actresses around you and go, 'Well, it's not going to happen to me,' 'cause I think it probably will. Which is why I'm planning to open supermarkets and gas stations."
