Robin Strasser: 'I Am Incapable Of Grieving And Lying At The Same Time'

Many of us have been unable to reach Robin Strasser's infamous hotline (212.414.5300) since the tragic cancellation of ONE LIFE TO LIVE and ALL MY CHILDREN was announced. The Emmy winning actress sent this message out to her public late Friday night as a response to the devastating news.  In her own words, unedited and uncensored, here is Robin Strasser's message:

"Yes, thousands of calls have crashed my HOTline and apparently a LOT of other people's phone lines too, at the answering service I use.

The technicians are TRYING to rectify but because the volume of calls was so great...it burned out more than 100 other numbers.

That's good and bad news. I apologize for the inconvenience and frustration you may have had trying to reach me.

There is MUCH to regret in ABC's decision to cancel All My Children AND One Life to Live. My fan/friends are calling in to hear what I think. That's what they do.

So huge were the numbers of them, that as of last night: the phone service t...echies HAD to dis-connect the number, so they could continue to service those other 99 persons.

They promise they will figure something out and even if the number has to be changed, they'll have the HOTline UP and running again.

If they can 'salvage' the message I made, yesterday...exactly one hour after I heard the appalling news...they will. I hope they can.

Long time callers clearly understand why it's always been called Robin's HOTline (lol).

I am INCAPABLE of GRIEVING and LYING at the same time..

and ya know as many things as I need to change about myself--that is NOT one of them.

I'm part of team headed by Frank Valentini, the best Executive Producer EVER in this genre...and in a 43 year career, I worked with a lot of them!

He pledges (with the positive affirmative intelligence that is his personal brand) that we will bring the show to a close with the BEST ending possible!

Great! I am SO ON-board!!!!

And yet...I ask myself ... why do I feel over-come with a mad-ass recklessness that compels me to tell the truth? (albeit the truth as I see it in this moment)

Surely you can't send out a press release calling the two soon to be cancelled shows 'Iconic' and then toss them out?... is it me? but I cannot make sense of this concept or how it works for any one?

I'm perched on that slippery slope of being judgmental...but too saddened to lie, I confess: my jury is in! This seems a cavalier and misconceived idea...excuse me, but possibly celebrating the loss of SO MANY jobs with the spin-maker use of the word 'EVOLVING' is inappropriate?

I've got a healthy addiction to Classic Movies...here's my current fave flashback montage:
Peter Finch shouting out the window and getting others to join in:
'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more'
note: he died soon after after giving that performance...
Amazing Susan Hayworth with her awesome sparky retort to her jailers in I Want to Live:
'What are you goin' to do? Kill me?'
and just for some release of tension add Bette Davis nervously trying to light her own cigarette in Dark Victory:
'I'm told I have a sense of humor'

It is NOT all about me...but as a human being, as one who has been BLESSED to be able to earn her living ALL her life doing work she LOVES...I just have to acknowledge that the pain is palpable.

From my viewpoint:
All the revisionist corporate spinning can NOT diminish or squelch the VALUE, the PASSIONATE LOYALTY, and the LOVE our audiences have for these shows.

A suggestion? In your way, be creative, and come up with ways to be as positive as you can muster but-- I implore you: put 'thought into action'... be pro-active.

If MY little Hotline can be CRASHED BY THE VOLUME OF CALLERS----what MIGHT happen if the energies of our fans went in other effective directions? I'm just asking.

Would you kindly help a Veteran Diva with a computer skills deficiency out? Please?

Blast, Twitter,Facebook and Chat Room this unexpurgated and un-edited piece of my mind.

And DO NOT DELETE THIS PLEASE:

I THANK YOU...OUR ENTIRE CAST/CREW/PRODUCTION AND DESIGN TEAMS THANK YOU...AND THE FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF THOSE AFFECTED BY THIS IMPENDING LOSS: THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU!!!!!!!
(yes, you are right...paraphrased shamelessly from James Cagney's Oscar winning Yankee Doodle Dandy)

BIG SHOUT OUT:
Please...may I count on applause from MY fan/friends for Michael Logan of TV Guide and his sagacious and courageous EARLY report that AMC and OLTL were going to be cancelled?
People give truth tellers a hard time...and I'm suggesting that his accurate prediction deserves some appropriate HONOR. It is because of that 'leak' that the plan could not be hidden nor the reveal delayed...
Six hundred of us about to lose our jobs, appreciate the advance notice in order to intelligently come up with Plan B.

LOVE, LIGHT, AND HOPE!
Robin

PS: I'll be moving to Los Angeles when the show closes down...and I'm gonna Twitter as soon as I can learn how...AND I am gonna pick a fight back with Chelsea Handller who dissed me at length on her show...oh yeah, uh huh...Plan B is shaping UP...more later!

Disclaimer: the opinions expressed are ONLY MY OWN. I have no ghost writer nor editor nor sought legal counsel before pressing 'send'.
(I did run on, but if not NOW, WHEN?)"

  1. Don't pack your bags just yet, Robin!

Frons done pissed off a too long sleeping giant and he's not going to like the results! The sponsors and affiliates won't be too happy, either, unless ABC reverses this decision.

There's time to recover this - somehow. Please tell your co-workers to join us in the petition signings and making your feelings known.

I can't imagine my evenings without a wind down with OLTL and AMC.

  3. Robin, you are a class act through & through! Thank you for your wonderful, heartfelt & very honest post. You've said what a great deal of fans have been thinking for a very long time. I'm going to try to be diplomatic here...but Frons is completely OUT OF TOUCH with what daytime viewers want to see on their television sets every day.

Yes, Frons might cite research groups & statistics, but do they show loyal fan support, some of which has spanned decades and which includes multiple generations of women? Do his reports include those of us who work and who count on our soaps to provide a welcome avenue of escape on a daily basis? Or those of us who catch soap on week-ends, on SoapNet, on the internet or on YouTube? No, none of that is taken into account.

Personally, I have been watching ABC soaps for over 20 years, and I will continue to do so until the genre dies due to the short-sighted visions (or should I say myopia) of men like Frons. I will NOT watch any of his new 'reality' or 'cooking' shows that pop up on ABCDaytime like warts...

Thank you one more time for you amazing post.

And please, please join Twitter! I'm 40 and picked up Twitter in no time. Now I have over 10,000 tweets and can't stop doing it.

  4. Oh my God! Thank you so much. Do you have any idea how many years we've wanted to hear someone finally say something? Generations are in mourning right now. Hundreds of thousands of people. You and your fellow professionals have devoted a lifetime to entertaining us. We never will forget it. Thank you Ms. Strasser. You are one great broad.

  5. Please Twitter. I'm 68 and picked it up quickly. And have I been using it to diss Frons, Sweeney and ABC. Someone ask Stephanie (Madison on AMC) who will watch a food show for 40 years. We are boycotting abc programming except for GH and remaining espisodes of AMC and OLTL. Oh yes, that food show should be renamed The Chew & Puke show.

  6. Robin you are an amazing actress and Ericka too! I have been a fan for many years and want to continue to see OLTL for many years to come! Cancel Brian Frons! Kill off this character but make sure they find his body so he can't come back! ABC has lost their mind!!!! I know the actors took a pay cut. Why not take Frons paycheck and stay on the air????? Many will boycott ABC and anyone advertising with them. I love OLTL and AMC!!! Come on FOX or BRAVO here is a goldmine for you to grab and put ABC out of business. If this goes through I will not watch anything on ABC. [email protected]

  8. Robin, I can guar-damn-tee that we the fans are not going down without a fight. We will blast everything we can possibly blst and fling as many bars of soap as we can possibly fling. We're pissed off that ABC did this. ABC has no frigging idea who they are toying with, who they just woke up. The 'focus groups' have nothing compared to the people that actually watch the daytime lineup. So, yes, can count on us to fight the fight for you.

  9. Robin please dont throw in the towel just yet! I love the work you have done on the show and i have watched you all my life as a kid thru adulthood. I DVR both shows and cant wait to come home and watch it. My evenings are filled with watching just OLTL n AMC. I have signed every petition circulating n joined all groups to save these shows. I pray all the millions of fans are doing will show those top executives that without the fans ABC will be NOTHING and they will loose millions of viewers over this decision. I hope all the actors and actresses join these groups. Only in mass volume can we conquer this bad decision made by Brian Frons. Keep your head up Robin your fans wont let you down!

  10. Thank you Robin, for sharing your thoughts about the impending execution of two of my favorite programs. I have made my views known to ABC and signed petitions and posted comments on Facebook. There is a list of sponsors now on FB so we can boycott those sponsors should the shows actually be cancelled.

I have watched AMC and OLTL since they were first aired. OLTL - well that's my really extended family and I can't believe that my WHOLE extended family will be executed. It's a sad day, indeed.

ABC so-called "executives", obviously don't know the definition of "entertainment". I can learn much more about dealing with social issues, friendships, loyalty, and, yes, maybe a bit of deceipt thrown in from OLTL than I would EVER learn from a "how to do it" politically correct program.

In any event, prayers are sent to you and all the families involved in this horrendous decision. You, as Dorian Lord Vickers, are quite a character. You, as Robin Strasser, are quite a lady, and I'm quite sure you are not ready to take your final bow.

Join FB and Twitter. It's fun. I'm 70, and it's really easy. There are good job search tools on both of these networks - just in case you need them. Best wishes.

  11. SkinTheKat - Soap Buff Uber AllesApril 16, 2011 at 9:28 AM

I have already written Bob Iger of Disney notifying him that I will terminate my associate with ABC AND Disney the last day OLTL airs if Angela Shapiro and Brian Frons aren't terminated with prejudice and people who have some pride in their work and understand that this is a classic, iconic piece of Americana entertainment on the line do not replace them.

The only group that Brian Frons consulted about replacing these soaps with a cooking show and weight loss show were his cigar-smoking, brandy-swilling, poker buddies. Let us show that there is a larger group of viewers that want to cancel Brian Frons.

There is a petition to fire Brian Frons. EVERYBODY who has any sense of worker solidarity with all the people this idiot displaced and relocated at great cost to themselves only to destroy their jobs anyway needs to sign it. Every one and everyone who cares about our shows do must do everything they can to give Disney a bloody nose and ABC a good kick in the ass for this!

  12. Of everyone I will miss Robin the most. Thanks RS for years of brilliant acting. Dorian was one of the greatest characters ever on OLTL.

  14. Robin thank you SO much for your candid comments! I think all "PR", nice comments went out the window when this bald headed liar didn't have the dignity to tell you all, in person, at OLTL what was happening & then to have him act so cavalier about it. You are truly a daytime diva at it's finest... you, Erika, Susan, & Kim. I find it most despicable to have Susan Lucci out there promoting her book on all the talk shows, telling people that the shows aren't going anywhere. They just hung her out to dry & that makes me sick in & of itself, but then to just have this idiot act SO unbelievably callous through this whole thing is sheer & utter stupidity at it's finest.
I love OLTL, always have! My Mom watched soaps her whole life & she got me hooked early at age 5. So I've been watching 25 of my 30 years of life, lol. I have laughed with you guys, & cried with you guys. And through all the ups & downs of my life, my soaps have been a constant companion & "friend" to me. I know I'm NOT alone in that sentiment. I wish you nothing but the best! I wish another network would pick the 2 soaps up & do a better job with them than ABC ever could. Even if that doesn't happen after Jan. of 2012 ABC daytime will NOT get my support. Blessings to you, & the rest of the cast & crew! One last thing... I totally agree with you & your opinion of Frank Valentini! He's amazing along with Ron, & I will be ever thankful for the both of them & how they tried their darndest to save THEIR soap!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Robin, I agree with you, truth teller are not often praised, but needed.
I posted this on another site but it warrants another post, I feel.
I think the one thing that you, I and the fans know, and also the good directors, producers, etc. (NOT FRONS) know is that the one thing they overlooked is that there is NOTHING in anyone's life that is a CONSTANT for 40 years...but soaps have been and are. You change homes, jobs, cars, spouses perhaps, you get out of college, you get married, you get divorced, people come, people go, you have loss, you have additions, life always move forward. However, the ONE THING, the ONE CONSTANT people could count on was tuning in each day to our shows. They did not leave, they did not change, they did not go away, they were a constant through the journey of our lives. That is why soaps could be on for 40 year and NO prime time show has or ever will be. The powers that be did not grasp that. Everyone needs ONE THING in their life that does not change, is constant, is there, year after year. We have all gone from teens to college, to older and yet this shows were ALWAYS on our journey. In times of change or upheaveal, we only needed to tune in daily and find our old friend, who never changed, who remained constant. All humans have a need for that.
The networks made a fatal mistake in thinking ANY talk show, prime show or show at all could replace that genre that soaps provide and people need.
Bravo to you for your honesty (and your talent). I have watched both shows since day one they aired. I back you 100 percent. Spenser2

  17. I love you Robin as I do everyone on OLTL. You have impacted my life in so many wonderful ways. I am beside myself with bitterness on this decision. I will be boycotting everything to do with ABC (including sponsors) if this move really happens. I'm not giving up on OLTL just yet. I still have such hopes of my show being saved. I've only watched since the mid 70's! Much love!

  18. It is very FRUSTRATING to have AMC and OLTL cancelled, without letting the loyal viewers have their say. I will miss them both, so many years and memories attached to them. They were there through good times and bad times. I hope one good thing comes of all these comments about boycotting ABC, that everyone will not watch these "crap" shows they are replacing the soaps with! Maybe this could be a start of our "Revolution" against reality TV programming! They ripped out our hearts; we need to hit them where they will be hurt, in their pockets! And I agree with some of the comments to fire Brian Frons, his flippant remarks that noone watches soaps anymore and we need to "evolve" to his way of thinking is absurd! GET A CLUE Brian, start reading the comments, which are 98% pro soaps! Thank you Robin, for your wonderful comments. Keep the Dorian alive by continuing to protest!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thank you for these wonderful words. You are truly a class act. I totally agree with all the other posters. There are no fans in the world like soap fans. Like millions of others, I have watched soaps for almost my whole life. In elementary school I ran home to not miss a minute. In high school I got a VCR to tape them. In college I scheduled my classes around them. When I started working I taped them every day and watched at night instead of primerime shows. Most recently since I had kids I have them take naps at 2:00 every day so I could watch OLTL. I will sign any petition and join any group to try to keep my shows on the air. I am so sad that a huge part of my life is coming to an end. Tell Mr. Frons when he is doing his "research" to come talk to me. I am his "key demographic". I'm a 39 year old stay at home mom sho watches daytime tv. I have NO INTEREST in any reality or cooking shows! I will switch networks to watch another soap before I EVER watch any new shows on ABC.

  21. Thank you, Robin for being so honest and real. Thank you for confirming why my admiration for your work as I watched daily over the years and marvel at your great work. Thank you for breathing life into Dorian...I truly hope One Life to Live has more lives to lives. I have been watching this show since it began and like everyone else am at a loss to see it end. This is a grave error. This is a poor corporate decision. Realty show only dummy down America. Soaps not only entertained, they also enlightened/educated us. Hopefully, someone will hear the fans and reconsider the ill fated decision before it is too late. Thank you for so being so honest.

  23. I have so many objections, I don't know where to begin. Suffice to say, if Frons and the "muckies" at Disney think they are going to dramatically increase viewership with yet ANOTHER "life-style" or "Reality" show, he might be in for a shock.

I've been with OLTL since 7/15/68 and I am not ready to give up on it!

  24. The biggest problem, IMO, is that Anne Sweeney and Brian Frons do not care. These soaps could be so much better, but they don't care. I hope when they go the "cheap route", it bites them in the a#s like it did NBC when they chose to air the Jay Leno show at 10:00 p.m. It's so sad.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oprah should make AMC & OLTL part of her new OWN network. It was the ABC soap viewers that made her popular. Those viewers remained tuned in after watching the soaps to watch her talk show. She owes the fans!
Let's all boycot all programing that takes the place of any soaps, all the time slots!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I am 41. I have watched One Live To Live since I was 8. I cannot believe that they would even consider taking this show off to replace it with some cooking show.

This show has been and is currently part of my everyday life. I look forward to coming home from working and "escaping" just for an hour. This shows terribly poor judgment on behalf of ABC. Who did they poll and survey? I know I wasn't asked. I hope they hear our voices and will decide to reconsider.

I think this is a shame that ABC are would add a ridiculous cooking and transformation show that will be off the air in a year or less. Soap fans like me and millions and others have been loyal to this genre for decades.

I don't have much more to say: but disrespectful and terrible move ABC!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Don't give up the fight yet, Robin. The fans are coming up with some very promkising ideas to save our soaps. To quote TugMcGraw."Ya gotta believe." Besides, David & Dorian have a lot of living to do! I've watched the show since '69, & it's going to leave a huge void in my day. Love & best wishes to the whole cast.
    Your depressed fan, Sherrie Shearer

  28. Dear Robin,
We love our soaps! Im hate game shows, reality shows and love soaps!
I am shocked and disappoited and will no longer tune in to any daytime show on ADC except for GH because it has not yet been cancelled. Best of luck to you and all the actors who will lose their jobs because of greed. Thank you for years of entertainment.

  29. Robin, I am imploring the fans of One Life to Live and All my children to boycott all the sponsors who support ABC. I will not buy or use their products any longer and I am telling them it is because these shows are being canceled by ABC and Brian Frons. I have contacted 25 so far. I also contacted my local ABC station and told them I am boycotting their shows. I will boycott Disney and all of its affiliates. One voice multiplied by millions will make the sponsors sit up and take notice, they will be losing money by supporting the decision Frons and ABC has made. It may not be too late. I would write about this on my blog but it is only about photography.

  33. This makes me so angry with ABC for destroying a legacy I have grown up with; and for what, a cooking show; a show about healthy lifestyles? Those television shows are a dime a dozen. You can find them on any network during any time slot. They're jumping on a bandwagon that will take the backseat to another important issue in 5 years. They think their ratings are poor with two iconic shows, what will they think after they lose millions of viewers over this? Is ABC so diluted they believe people will tune in to watch a show like many others, on countless other networks? Are they so dense they believe they will gain more viewers than they will lose after this injustice? How many women will set their DVRs for whatever takes the place of our beloved soaps? They'll lose far more viewers than they can ever gain with this gross misjudgment. I am sickened by this! I was raised watching OLTL and GH. I'm 34 and started watching when I was 5. I remember watching with my mom after kindergarten. My mom and grandma still watch. We have been faithful viewers of ABC's daytime, my entire life. My mom recorded them for me, , when I was in school. My friends used to come over after school to watch everyday. I still DVR my shows and watch them at night after my daughter goes to bed. I've been waiting for the day she would be old enough to enjoy them with me. It saddens me that this might never happen. It makes me angry and I will never again tune into ABC daytime to watch any reality shows that only exist at the expense of something I have loved my entire life. ABC obviously has no loyalty. They are proving that they don't care about the viewers or the hundreds it takes to put together a show with such heart. I am very sorry for you Robin, and for the others impacted by this unjust decision. I truly believe the people in charge will live to regret their choice in a big way. People don't want the same shows over and over again all day long. ABC has the news with Good Morning America; they have miscellaneous news with The View, covering entertainment and lifestyle; they have cooking with Rachel Ray; and after our soaps end, they have Dr. Oz. They don't need to take our soaps away to play the same things all day. I never thought I would live to see this day. I never thought I would have to say goodbye to OLTL. Soaps have been a staple in daytime for decades and it's unthinkable to me that we are expected to watch it end! It breaks my heart to imagine a future where I don't have the option to unwind at night by checking in with my favorite people in Llanview. I never watched AMC, but I would fight for any soap, because if 1 is at risk, it won't be long before they take them all away. Robin, you're an amazing talented woman; you and all the others, who have given so much of yourselves to the audience, are all amazing! Thank you for letting me laugh with you for so many years. Thank you for letting me cry with you. Thank you for your dedication and giving me a drama that is a part of daily life for me, for 29 years now. I will contact the people in charge to express my disappointment in ABC and my plans to NEVER watch any of the garbage they want to replace AMC and OLTL with. I hope that many others will do the same. Thank you for your emotional and honest statement, Robin; please keep us updated. If anyone has any fantastic ideas of how we can showcase our love and loyalty to get something accomplished before it's truly ended, please pass it on and let us all know so we can help. This situation is just horrible and I can't express how sorry I am for all of you wonderful people. You have all been a part of my life for so long, that I can't imagine how things will be if this happens. I can just hope and pray that something can be done to rectify the situation and save something that deserves to be saved.

  36. What did Brian Frons say about The Young & Restless years back?

I can't repeat it verbatim, however, the tone of his message showed a hint of contempt for this genre and its viewers.

He'll replace the daytime dramas with another cooking show and another mindnumbing talk show, or some variation?

The whole business of entertainment is less about art and more about money.

If you keep feeding the *kiddies* cheap junkfood and calling it dinner...

Hey, here's a novel idea. Turn off the sets and pick up a book.

Soap stars: There is enough money and discarded talent lying in wait. Get creative and save your *art*.

  37. Robin, Here's how I see it: New York, L.A., and Network TV are too expensive. Frons said he would field offers to sell the shows. Could both shows be picked up by a new production company or cable network and moved to Atlanta? It's a major east coast city where Drop Dead Diva (Lifetime) and The Walking Dead (aMc) are already filming. Many movies are being made here, too, because of huge tax breaks given by the state of Georgia. Screen Gems bought Fort McPherson (on the main subway line, MARTA) and is constructing sound stages there. Bring AMC and OLTL to the ATL--wouldn't that be peachy? We would love to have you!

  38. Isn't there anyone out there to save the soaps how about Oprah's new OWN station. Fans out here are do not need another reality or talk show. They are a dime a dozen. It was the only reason for the soap channel. We, the fans, loved being able to keep up with our serial shows almost 24/7. Please don't take them from us some one out there here us and rake in the the ratings. I hope ABC reconsiders but if not there has to be another way to keep them on television not just plug in on line. We are screaming with a loud voice does anybody out there here us?
