NEWS: Cancellation Fallout - Hundreds of Jobs Lost, Reactions

AFTRA calls ABC soap cancellations a "devastating loss"
"AFTRA representatives are communicating with affected members in both cities to ensure they are fully informed of their rights and benefits under the AFTRA Network Television Code. Additionally, AFTRA is in contact with ABC representatives to oversee as smooth a transition as possible for these performers."

Jobs will go down drain with cancellation of ABC soaps
Besides the roughly 40 actors employed full time by the two shows, hundreds of other performers, stunt men and women, directors, producers, writers and crew members will be let go. The cancellation of the two soaps is also a blow to production in Los Angeles and New York.

TIME: Running out of lives to live
The whole point of a soap is that nothing can really be the same as your soap. But for enough TV viewers, they're now an alternative. Which is why one of TV's oldest formats is running out of lives to live.

Susan Lucci: It's been a fantastic journey
"It's been a fantastic journey. I've loved playing Erica Kane and working with Agnes Nixon and all the incredible people involved with ALL MY CHILDREN," said daytime vet Susan Lucci. "I'm looking forward to all kinds of new and exciting opportunities."

Kelly Ripa: ALL MY CHILDREN Cancellation "Makes Me Sick"
"ALL MY CHILDREN means so much more to me than any place, because [Mark and I] met there, we had our children there, it was a big part of our lives, and I think that to cancel a show that has been on television for so many years, what are you going to replace it with? I mean I just don’t know. I just feel like it’s such a training ground for so many actors."

NPR: It could be a lot worse, as far as replacements
"What ABC will be using to replace the canceled shows says a lot about the economics and viewer habits that are driving the changes: they're adding two shows that the network says are inspired by the success of its talk show THE VIEW. While that sounds ... gross, the truth is that there are a couple of bright spots if you look closely."

  1. I AM OUTRAGED BY THIS. OLTL IS MY FAVORITE SOAP ON ABC. IT SEEMS THAT ABC ONLY CARES ABOUT MONEY AND NOT ABOUT THE FANS OF BOTH OLTL MY FAVORITE AND AMC. NOW THEY HAVE GONE AND PUT MONEY AHEAD OF US THE FANS. WE DO NOT NEED MORE TALK SHOWS AND COOKING SHOWS. PLEASE FIX THIS ABC BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. YOU WILL LOSE ME AND SO MANY OTHER VIEWERS FROM ABC. HELEN, NYC.

  2. It's not just daytime. I can't always watch during the day but I do catch up on SoapNet or the internet. This is the one thing I always have to look forward to everyday. Please don't cancel OLTL. I really love this show.

  3. I as well as thousands will be boycoting the new shows!
It is about money not how viewers have changed!
I don't watch the View! It is like a gagle of hens all talking at the same time! So who needs another talk show or food show for that matter.
Baby boomers rule, they are retired and they love their soaps that they grew up with! We will not be watching these new shows!
I hope Fronz fries and ends up without a job!

  6. Boycott ABC & Disney prime time shows. It's the only way to communicate your disappointment that will matter to the network suits!

  7. I am not only boycotting ABC and Disney; I will turn my loyalty of 40 years to ABC over to another network. So long GMA; hello Morning Joe. So long Diane Sawyer; hello Brian Williams. So long View; hello Ellen. I think I'll even try out those other soap operas I've never watched....

  8. I can't believe OLTL is being cancelled the writers finally waking up and giving me "love in the afternoon' and now its being cancelled? Quess a little to late huh?
I just can't believe GH over AMC is staying on? Heck I only see 'death and violence in the afternoon " on that soap.

  9. You people are delusional. Networks can't even afford to have scripted shows on all of primetime. How in the world can they afford expensive scripted shows in daytime hours, when fewer eyeballs are watching?

As for the boycotts: get real. CBS cancelled two soaps in the past 18 months. And they are STILL the number one network.

Daytime soap ratings have been declining for years. They simply aren't economically feasible anymore. But the genre will live on in primetime.
