NEWS: Ron Raines, Precious, Paul Anthony Stewart, Ofcom

VIDEO: Ron Raines and a ‘New Bern Romance' debuts
On Saturday, Raines showed a softer side. He filled the First Baptist Church on Middle Street with the sound of a romance that was sung, performed and written in honor of New Bern’s founding in 1710.

The piece was performed as part of this week’s Carolina Chamber Music Festival by Raines as well as two violinists, a violist, harpist and a cellist. Each year, the festival musicians perform a new work written by a composer-in-residence, said festival co-director Jennifer Lucht. This year’s world original piece was the “New Bern Romance” written by composer Jim Wann in honor of the city’s 300th anniversary.

The image of nursing: The unskilled nurse (featuring PASSIONS' Precious)
From 2003 to 2005, the role of a private duty nurse on PASSIONS was played by an orangutan. The character, Precious, actually wore a nursing uniform. Fortunately, her work did not prevent her from enjoying handsome Latino men, gin and tonics, and food fights. Yes, that was a campy soap opera, but it reflects a powerful and enduring element of the modern nursing image.

EASTENDERS cleared over birth footage
Ofcom today dismissed a complaint from a mother that EASTENDERS infringed her privacy by featuring footage of her giving birth. In the May 11 and 12 episodes this year, the Ian Beale character showed his daughter Lucy a DVD featuring footage of one his "employees" giving birth in an attempt to scare her into having an abortion. The BBC had sourced the footage from an educational film produced by the National Childbirth Trust of a woman, dubbed Ms K by the media regulator, during and after the birth of her son. However, Ms K submitted a complaint to Ofcom that her and her son's privacy had been "unwarrantably infringed" by the two episodes.
