Dixie Carter Has Passed Away At Age 70

Dixie Carter has passed away at age 70. In addition to her run on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES as Gloria Hodge (which earned her an Emmy nomination), Carter made her mark in daytime on THE EDGE OF NIGHT as Brandy Henderson. She also appeared on THE DOCTORS and filled for Nancy Pinkerton as Dorian on ONE LIFE TO LIVE in 1974, while Pinkerton was on maternity leave.

Born in McLemoresville, Tenn., in 1939, Carter was probably best known for her run as Julia Sugarbaker on DESIGNING WOMEN from 1986-1993. Before that she played Maggie on DIFF'RENT STROKES, Carlotta on FILTHY RICH and April on ON OUR OWN, among many other roles.

In recent years she has appeared in the films That Evening Sun and Our First Christmas.

Carter is survived by two daughters and her husband, Hal Holbrook, who started his career on the daytime soap THE BRIGHTER DAY.

  2. I'm sad to hear this. She was a unique performer. I can't believe she left us so early. I feel bad for her husband Hal and her family.

Thanks for the memories Miss Julia Sugerbaker. RIP

  3. Dixie was one of the first celebs I interviewed when I moved to LA. She was always gracious and hospitable, a "cougar" before the word was coined. A devotee of yoga, she had a very practical (and refreshing) approach to body image, telling me: "Look, I'm not Jane Fonda and neither are you. Just do your best!"
