50 Greatest Soap Actors: #38 Philip Carey

NAME: Philip Carey
RANK: 38
SOAP ROLES: Asa Buchanan, ONE LIFE TO LIVE (1979-2008), Asa Buchanan, ALL MY CHILDREN (2004); Bob Corcoran, BRIGHT PROMISE (1972)

AWARDS:
1999 Soap Opera Digest Award nomination for Outstanding Male Scene Stealer
1997 Soap Opera Digest Award nomination for Outstanding Male Showstopper
1994 Soap Opera Digest Award nomination for Outstanding Scene Stealer
1993 Soap Opera Digest Award nomination for Outstanding Villain/Villainess

COMMENTS FROM THE PANEL:
Connie Passalacqua Hayman (Marlena De Lacroix): Always supremely watchable (and sometimes a hoot) as Asa on OLTL. Asa was a total daytime original, and Carey's acting had real endurance. Watch him in his old movies such as Calamity Jane and Mister Roberts.

Patrick Erwin: An engaging, talented actor whose strength made us care about Asa long after his many bad deeds and fleeting marriages stopped surprising us.

Roger Newcomb: A real legend who made a lasting impact on ONE LIFE TO LIVE and the whole entertainment industry. Despite all his film success, my favorite non-soap role from Carey was his guest appearance on ALL IN THE FAMILY, where he played Archie's macho friend Steve who turned out to be gay.
