Queen Bea: A Soapsical Interview With Jason Tam

Roger Newcomb and I nearly laughed our heads off at the February 9th performance of "Queen Bea: A Soapsical."  This is a hilarious new musical featuring some of your favorite ONE LIFE TO LIVE stars.  There is one more performance on Saturday February 13th, in Manhattan.  This is absolutely a can't-miss production for soap fans. You can still reserve a seat by calling 212.695.6909.  Then enjoy the below interview with Jason Tam, who plays a young hero in the show.

We Love Soaps: I know you’ve heard this a lot tonight, but you have such a wonderful voice.  Any chance we’ll hear you sing more as Marco on ONE LIFE?
Jason Tam: Well, we are actually doing another musical episode.  I don’t know when or what or the details of anything.  I just know something like that is going to happen again in the very near future.  As long as I don’t have to rap again I’ll be thrilled.

We Love Soaps: What made you want to take on this role in "Queen Bea"?
Jason Tam: To be honest, I was asked to.  I love all these people.  I actually got  to see the first version of this when Mark Lawson did it.  It looked like so much fun.  I was thrilled when they asked me to be a part of it.  It’s been awesome.

We Love Soaps: What do you think of ONE LIFE’S new home?
Jason Tam: It’s great! It has windows! I get my own dressing room.  It’s very exciting.  It’s nice to change things up a bit.  It’s hard to see some of the people leave, like several of the crew members.  But I think we did a really good job of bringing everybody we could so we’re still a cohesive production team.

We Love Soaps: Aside from singing more, what’s coming up for Marco?
Jason Tam: Well, Marco is on his way to possibly getting his heart broken.  There’s a little bit of shady business going on.  He’s a little afraid when Ford came back into town.  He’s trying to take the high road in this relationship.

We Love Soaps: How is that for you to be playing a character whose girlfriend is feeling tempted to be with someone else?
Jason Tam: It makes me really jealous! Seriously.  I’ll be there on set, watching the monitor of Brittany [Underwood] and David [Gregory] shooting a scene and just seething a little bit.  It’s interesting how it actually affects me.  But it’s a lot of fun to get that kind of conflict to play.

We Love Soaps: Will that conflict continue?
Jason Tam: I hope so.  I think there is a lot of potential there.

We Love Soaps: I’m just glad that Marco has more to do.  Any thoughts about more theater?
Jason Tam: Sure, I would love to get back into that.  When I was doing "A Chorus Line" and ONE LIFE TO LIVE at the same time it was a little tiring because there was overlap.  I got about two hours of sleep a night.  But I would love to get back to theater.  It was great to have ["Queen Bea"] as an opportunity.  I think I want to start finding a project in New York that maybe I could do the same time as the show.
