2010 Daytime Emmy Rulebook: A Few Notes Of Interest

Here are a few interesting tidbits from the rulebook from this year's Daytime Emmy Awards.

Drama Series (One episode for one hour shows, two for B&B)
The Emmy® award for Drama Series recognizes the work of the Executive Producer[s], Supervising Producer[s], Senior Producer[s], Producer[s], Coordinating Producer[s], Line Producer[s] and Consulting Producer[s] credited on a minimum of 19% of the original episodes on a Drama.

Acting Categories (Unlimited number of scenes from one episode)
The Emmy® award recognizes the work of the Performer. All eligible performers can enter. Note: A Preliminary Pre-Screen ballot for each of the Drama Performer Categories will be assigned to registered, eligible peer voters only. They will vote for 2 performers per show, per category. Individuals receiving the most votes will advance to a single Blue Ribbon round of judging.

Younger Actor and Actress are once again 25 and below.

Many of the technical awards require the nominee to have been credited on 40% of the episodes. For writing and directing, the requirement is being credited on only 19%. As with Drama Series, only one show is submitted to be judged.

  1. Is the acting category different from the last couple of years? It always bothered me that an actor/actress could get nominated that didnt really have a storyline. It sounds like if you have a good episode you send that in and can get nominated. They need to change that rule and make them have scenes from different episodes.

  2. Katie, the one episode rule started last year I believe. It was two episodes before that (I may be a year off). The only other thing that has changed is they have gone from 2 pre-noms per show to 3 and back to 2. But you are right. One episode is all you need to win. Jeff Branson started in December on GL and won an Emmy last year.

  3. The one episode thing is what I think needs to be changed that's like when Kim Zimmer had her one good scene at Jeffrey Funeral, could beat Crystal's entire year of the Otalia storyline because it was so spread out. Then again the Emmy's have always been crazy.

  4. though i understand the concern about the one episode requirement, i think crystal chappell has a lock on this strictly from the graveyard confession scenes. they were easily the most powerful part of that love story and by presenting them on their own, without the muddy of other (fine) scenes, will make that raw emotion even more powerful.

i would like to hear someone's thoughts on what jessica leccia should submit for supporting? i always hear GL & otalia peeps talking about crystal, but i worry about jess. her greatest asset was the growth of natalia in 2009, which i fear cannot be presented in scenes from one episode.

  5. I don't see how Kim Zimmer's performance at Jeffrey's funeral could ever beat out Crystal Chappell's spectacular performance with The Graveyard Confession scene. Zimmer's acting was so way over the top - I am not sure that the average viewers were ever completely drawn in to the Jeffrey/Reva storyline as they were with the Otalia storyline. I actually believe Kim Zimmer had some other scenes during the year that were better than the one at Jeffrey's funeral. Crystal Chappell's performance in The Graveyard Confession scene was so on target, so mesmerizing that the viewers felt like they were right there with her - experiencing what she was going through - feeling what she was feeling.

  6. In reply to Collins - I agree that it may be somewhat more difficult to identify a specific scene for Jessica Leccia than it is for Crystal Chappell because her greatest asset was the growth of Otalia in 2009. I personally would probably pick her "runaway bride/gazebo scenes". Both of their performances were so bravura and seamless throughout the entire year that it is almost impossible to pick one over the other for the Emmy. Their performances drew the audience so far into their lives that I almost think the Daytime Emmy is not worthy of them!

  7. @judesue i might bite on leccia presenting scenes from one of the days leading up to the gazebo, but if you go back and look at that friday, there isn't much there that is "wow" inducing. the conversation with olivia, while heartfelt and a fantastic payoff, is not "oh my god, take this award RIGHT NOW!" inducing.

now, the wednesday (i think) of that week, where she is prepping with the discussion with the mary statue and the vows and the anguish...now that's some good acting.

with as fickle as the emmy's can be, i'm still just holding my breathe for a nomination for both, forget about wins-- no matter how justified both would be for both women. you really never know with some of those emmy people.

  8. Alison Sweeney will get it for the Sami slap-heard-'round-the-world episode. She better take it home this year.

  9. Could Y&R's Stafford put her "I hate you" lipstick-on-the-mirror episode in? Only problem is that she went a little over-the-top in other parts of that episode.

  10. @collins i agree with you on every point regarding Jessica Leccia. You are probably right about the scenes leading up to the gazebo scenes, particularly the one with the mary statue and the vows and the anguish, are probably the better choices to submit for the Emmy. I think the one episode constraint works against both Jessica and Crystal regarding the Emmy. Some of their best work was spread over more than one episode. For example, unless they define an episode differently than I think it is (i.e. one day's episode)Crystal's graveyard confession is actually spread over 2 episodes. I think the limitations of the Emmy's rules are a 'crock'. It should be for the actor's or actress's body of work for that year. An actress might have one scene/episode that is so powerful that it deserves an Emmy. But Jessica's and Crystal's body of work during 2009 throughout all of their scenes leave no question in my mind that each of them deserve to be nominated for an Emmy. It would be extremely difficult to accept one being nominated without the other. I think their performances are excellent examples of the quality of each's performance raising the other's level of performance. I think most would not be surprised by Crystal's performance helping to 'raise' Jessica's performance -as further verified by how much the quality of the acting overall has improved at DOOL since she returned as Carly. But, going back to your original comment on this site today, I think it is all the more impressive that Jessica's performance served to raise Crystal's level of performance - which many people did not think was possible. I think both Jessica and Crystal have pretty much said this about each other in interviews. I, too, am concerned that Jessica will not get the recognition she deserves because her style of acting is more 'under the radar' but every bit as powerful.

  11. GL probably won't get many nominees, that's just the way it goes. Last year they had, what 4 noms in the acting category? It's a cancelled soap ( I love GL but I wouldn't mind the academy focusing on the alive soaps)

  12. marley, I agree that they probably won't get many, but the actors will be the exception. I think CC and KZ will get the pre-noms for lead and GT and MR the supporting. I think that CC deserves the final nom, but fear that KZ might get the sentimental vote. It would be a shame if CC didn't get the nom and IMO the win this year. I've pretty much watched every other soap this year and I haven't seen a better performance than the graveyard scenes.

For the men, probably GA for lead and JD for supporting. I'm not sure who else, maybe JB.

If JL has a shot at a pre-nom/nom she should either submit the ep where Rafe is yelling out her after finding out about her and Olivia or the episode where she finds out she's pregnant(hospital) or as mentioned above, the Thursday ep of wedding week. The thing about JL is her performances were always understated. It was the nuances and attention to detail that made her performances so compelling. Unfortunately, Emmy voters tend to like high volume over low key.

  13. tallulah, my darling.

I think CC will get a nom and maybe GA or JD and that's it.

  14. marley, dear.;)

GT had some good stuff. Dinah's goodbye scene with Vanessa comes to mind. If MR submits the ep where Phillip finds Lizzie on the floor, she could have a shot. A one ep submission is actually an advantage for her.

  15. I think Maura West, Carly on As the World Turns, will not only get the pre-nomination and actual nomination. She will get the actual emmy for her intervention scenes prior to going to rehab.
