News Round-up: Smith, Morton, Boynton, Online Ads

BBC continuity announcer sacked for warning that EASTENDERS ‘is actually crap tonight’
A former BBC1 announcer is challenging the termination of his contract for what he claims were simply honest appraisals of forthcoming programs. "Reithian values dictate that the BBC should educate, inform, and entertain," said announcer Rob Durham, "I just couldn’t with a clear conscience announce that CASH IN THE ATTIC was going to blow anyone’s intellectual skirt up."

Prior to his dismissal Durham has faced several disciplinary actions, most recently for proposing that viewers "may find the Channel 4 documentary on Byzantine architecture more edifying than Seaside Rescue" and for suggesting that HOLBY CITY was "cockney rhyming slang".

CORRIE's Samia Smith (Maria) promises more 'twists'
"There's a lot more to come. There are so many twists and turns and I've just found out about some of them! They're full on with each other from hereon in. They're madly in love with each other, so when it does come crashing down, it's really going to hurt…"

Joe Morton to recur on BROTHERS & SISTERS
Joe Morton has joined ABC's drama series BROTHERS & SISTERS for a major recurring role. On the upcoming fourth season of "Brothers & Sisters," which will find Justin Walker (Dave Annable) in medical school, Morton will play his tough but nurturing anatomy professor. Morton (ex-James, SEARCH FOR TOMORROW; ex-Abel, ANOTHER WORLD) is set to appear in 7-10 episodes.

Online Video Ad Market Grows
Video advertising is growing rapidly, but remains a relatively small share of overall Internet ad spending, per eMarketer. Furthermore, for online video to become a large market, with the scale to attract substantial dollars from major brand marketers, two types of convergence will need to take place: one for content and one for monetization.

Worth Watching: IMAGINARY BITCHES
From today's New York Observer: "IMAGINARY BITCHES is a hilarious, better than SEX AND THE CITY, YouTube sensation you probably don't know about. The Web series, which premiered last year, was just nominated for an Emmy in the "New Approaches" category. Soap star Eden Riegel of ALL MY CHILDREN stars as a single gal whose friends all get into their boyfriend bubbles, so she creates her own social world populated by imaginary friends who aren't so friendly. The show, created and produced by Ms. Riegel's husband, Andrew Miller, is currently being shopped as a movie. A second season or 15-minute online movie is also in consideration, according to TVGuide.com."

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: ATWT's Peter Boynton (ex-Tonio)
The resume of Peter Boynton is nothing if not varied: He has performed on Broadway (“She Loves Me”), television (AS THE WORLD TURNS) and the big screen (Hellraiser III). This weekend, he’ll add singing with the Vermont Philharmonic to his list of entertainment accomplishments. Boynton, who has helped shape the celebrated performing-arts program at Harwood Union High School, will join the Philharmonic for its annual Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 15) at the Hardwick Town House and 4 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 16) at the Moose Meadow Lodge in Duxbury. $5-$15. www.vermontphilharmonic.org.
