INTERVIEW: GENERAL HOSPITAL's Rebecca Herbst Offers Emmy Fashion/Beauty Tips

Rebecca Herbst has been a fan favorite since joining the cast of GENERAL HOSPITAL in 1997 as Elizabeth Webber. During her run on the show, she has received two Daytime Emmy nominations and won a Soap Opera Digest Award. She has designed her own Emmy dresses every year since joining GH. With the Daytime Emmys coming up on Sunday, August 30, she shared some beauty and fashion tips with We Love Soaps and offered her thoughts on our Emmy attire. Look for Herbst to appear on the Emmy telecast in the "Fashion Show" segment with co-star Tyler Christopher.

We Love Soaps: Knowing that you design your own Emmy dresses, where do your inspirations come from?
Rebecca Herbst: I draw inspiration from some of my favorite fashion magazines. However, I try not to be too trendy. You can never go wrong with a classic look – it never goes out of style.

We Love Soaps: In designing a dress, does it make a difference if you're nominated vs. just attending?
Rebecca Herbst: It doesn’t matter whether I am nominated or not, it’s an exciting event with lots of photographers and fans so I always try to look my best.

We Love Soaps: Has the move of the Daytime Emmys to Los Angeles changed your designs? It's earlier in the day and hotter.
Rebecca Herbst: The change in the location and time has impacted both what I wear and how I do my makeup. For my dress I select lighter fabrics that won’t get me over-heated. I also try to steer away from wearing heavy makeup. That means I need take very good care of my skin well before the big day. I always wash my face before going to bed at night so the day’s dirt and makeup doesn’t clog my pores. I use the PURPOSE® Gentle Cleansing Wash, which not only washes away dirt and makeup but it’s as gentle as water so even my sensitive skin doesn’t break out. Then, on the day of the event I wear PURPOSE® Dual Treatment Moisture Lotion with SPF 15 to protect my skin from the intense L.A. sun.

We Love Soaps: Who are your favorite designers?
Rebecca Herbst: I love Tory Burch because of the vibrant and fun styles. I think fashion should be fun, approachable and comfortable.

We Love Soaps: Do you have a favorite Emmy dress you have worn in the past?
Rebecca Herbst: I really love the short, little black dress that I designed with my mom last year. It turned out to be one of my favorites because it was flirty, yet comfortable.

We Love Soaps: What accessories are in this year?
Rebecca Herbst: Accessories with color are in this season—whether it is the color of your dress or just adding a pop of color with a clutch. I also love delicate, colorful jewelry. I fell in love with a multi-strand gold necklace, and I knew I had to wear it to the Daytime Emmy Awards.

We Love Soaps: What are Emmy fashion "do's" and "don'ts" ?
Rebecca Herbst: I think the ultimate fashion “do” – no matter what the occasion is – is being happy and at peace with yourself because that will show through on the outside. As for fashion “don’ts” I think being too over-the-top with your dress, hair and makeup is sometimes a mistake—being trendy.

We Love Soaps: What is the biggest fashion mistake a nominee or presenter can make?
Rebecca Herbst: I always choose a dress that I am comfortable in; it would be terrible mistake if I chose a dress that I couldn’t walk in or that I worried would fall down

We Love Soaps: How has the recession impacted award fashion?
Rebecca Herbst: Just like everyone else, I think celebrities are trying to be more mindful of how they are spending their money. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to look like a million bucks— you just need some creativity and confidence. I’ve told you a lot about my fashion, but my skincare routine is very affordable. The PURPOSE® Gentle Cleansing Wash that I use is only $5.99 and the PURPOSE® Dual Treatment Moisture Lotion with SPF 15 is $8.99 – they both do wonders for my complexion, and no one would know that I only spent $15.

We Love Soaps: What are the biggest changes you have seen in award fashion in the past 10 years?
Rebecca Herbst: In the past 10 years, women have become more adventurous in fashion and willing to take more risks. Although the full length ball gown is still a red carpet hit, women are trying new things from cocktail dresses to suits!

We Love Soaps: The day of the ceremony, how far in advanced do you get dressed?
Rebecca Herbst: It usually takes me about 3 - 4 hours to get ready. That’s including hair (which I do myself), makeup, and then getting dressed

We Love Soaps: On a lighter note, the guys from We Love Soaps are wearing black tuxes with pink shirts and black ties (no vest) this year. Are you predicting this will be a fashion hit or a fashion disaster? We're worried!
Rebecca Herbst: Sounds like a fashion hit to me! I love that you bring a touch of class and sophistication with a black tux and tie but show your fun side with a pop of pink – it’s exactly how I like to show my fashion sense.
