News Round-up: Garrett, Pullo, Pelphrey, Roberts, FNL

GH's Drew Garrett (Michael) has proud grandfather
Niles Cooney, 79, grows oranges on 25 acres four miles west of the Florida Turnpike on Ten Mile Creek in Fort Pierce. He’s owned the grove since 1981, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that his grandsons Drew Garrett, 19, and Brett Nelson, 21, started coming up from Jupiter to help him around the farm.

“Drew drove tractors and picked fruit,” he said of the teenage heartthrob who recently was cast as mob scion Michael Quartermaine Corinthos on GENERAL HOSPITAL. “Now he is on the cover of Soap Opera Weekly.

“He’s a local boy made good,” said Cooney, whose daughter Karole was front-of-house manager at the Kravis Center. “I’ve been hanging out with him all his life. He used to come down with me to the farmer’s market in Coral Gables. There are a lot of widows there who can’t carry the fruit. Those bags are heavy. Drew would carry it out to their cars. Everybody loved him; he is a super-polite kid. And he looks like an angel.”

Online Exclusive! TV's 101st Top Episode
101 FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS "PILOT" 10/3/06 - From its sun-baked opening shots of the flat Texas landscape, NBC's Friday Night Lights pilot offered viewers an unobstructed view of Dillon, Texas, a town where football is pretty darn close to God. Despite the youthful beauty (male and female) on display, Friday Night Lights was no trashy teen soap. We believed in these people. To achieve that honesty, writer/director Peter Berg encouraged his cast to ad lib dialogue, says star Kyle Chandler, "but only after knowing the material 100% and your characters 125%." By the end of the episode, when the superstar quarterback Jason Street (Scott Porter) is severely injured on the field, Dillon, Texas is stamped onto our hearts. "It's not a show about football," says Chandler. "It's a show about people and human interaction and yes, a football coach and his team, but that is just a fertile ground for storytelling."
