Actor Joel Crothers, 44, a 20-year veteran of daytime soap operas who most recently had a featured role on SANTA BARBARA, has died of cancer.
A family friend said the actor had been hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with the disease since Oct. 22, having first learned he had lymphoma in August. Mr. Crothers died Wednesday.
He was born in Cincinnati, raised in New York and educated at Harvard University, began acting at age 9 in the CBS series LAMP UNTO MY FEET.
He appeared in several other TV shows and Broadway plays before launching a successful soap-opera career in the mid 1960s, said a friend, Paula Hartz.
Mr. Crothers recently played J. Stanfield Lee in the NBC daytime drama SANTA BARBARA, which debuted in July 1984. He previously acted in THE EDGE OF NIGHT, SOMERSET, THE SECRET STORM and DARK SHADOWS.
The actor also appeared in several episodes of prime-time shows such as ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, THE DEFENDERS, HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL, DEATH VALLEY DAYS, RESCUE 8, THE INVESTIGATORS, ZANE GREY THEATER, STUDIO ONE, PLAYHOUSE 90, DRAFT THEATER and GOODYEAR PLAYHOUSE.
He is survived by his parents, George and Ruth Crothers, and his brother, Michael. Private services were planned.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Crothers was born on January 28, 1941. I remember him best from his role as Miles Cavanaugh on THE EDGE OF NIGHT.
Thank you for remembering joel crothers.i have talked to so many people in their forties who had no idea that this man died 23 years ago.He was magnificent as miles.I am 46 now.in 1985 i was 21 when he died,it was the same year dennis parker died.The rumor was that joel had aids,his career was about to take off when he finally moved to california.I truly believe he would have gotten a role on the young and the restless.I ALWAYS THOUGHT HOW SAID THAT SUCH A NICE BEAUTIFUL MAN DIED ALONE WITH NO COMPANION BY HIS SIDE.he was a gay man who had to hide his lifestlye.IT IS NOW 23 YEARS LATER AND TEN DAYTIME ACTORS ARE HIDING THEIR LIFESTLYES.THIS IS SO RIDICULOUS,I HOPE THAT 2009 IS THE YEAR A PROMINANT FRONT BURNER ACTOR WHO IS ON YOUNG AND RESTLESS WILL FINALLY GO TO THE MEDIA AND COME OUT. THIS WOULD BE FANTASTIC FOR ALL THE SIXTEEN YEAR OLD BOYS IN AMERICA,WHO ARE SUFFERING IN SILENCE.
