News Brief

SARA A. BIBEL: Step Grandfather Clause
"Last week AS THE WORLD TURNS featured what would have been, if it weren’t for the rampant spoilers, a truly surprising and intriguing twist. Brian kissing the drunk Luke minutes after his bizarre post-mastectomy marriage to his grandmother Lucinda was the stuff that soap dreams are made of. It was also a huge step forward in ATWT’s treatment of Luke. He is finally a soap character who happens to be gay rather than a gay soap character."

MARK HARDING: Will ATWT Brian's potential be realized?
"...there are warning signs that this story is not going to be subtle, nuanced, or authentic. It seems Brian is going to be the sleazy guest villain of this quarter, bilking Lucinda while trying to shag Luke...which is already raising groans of disgust from the soap quarters I visit."

Atomic Love: ATWT's Nuke - A love story for the 21st century
According to Daniel R. Coleridge, author of "The Q Guide to Soap Operas," some soaps had featured gay characters in the past, and had even depicted a bit of courtship between two men. But on Aug. 17, 2007, Luke and Noah shared a historic kiss. And their resulting relationship, Coleridge says, "is the most fully fleshed-out that daytime TV has ever seen. It's 2008, and now we're finally seeing two young gay men have a romance like we've seen straight couples have for nearly 70 years of soap opera." The "Nuke" kiss-you know a soap couple has arrived, Coleridge explains, when fans bestow the pair with a Brangelinaesque name amalgam-electrified the fan community and even lured otherwise nonsoap viewers to their sets, their DVRs and YouTube to catch up on buzzed-about clips. "That is the way soap operas are going to stay modern," Coleridge says, "by continuing to reflect issues we can relate to from real life, instead of showing some fantasy world where people have amnesia or come back from the dead."

Five Simple Rules For Introducing A New Character
Sara A. Bibel offers five tips for making new soap characters work.

Montel back on GL for Thanksgiving
Montel Williams (Clayton Boudreau) returns to GUIDING LIGHT this week when the Boudreau clan celebrates Thanksgiving with a family get-together, producing several uncomfortable moments for the youngest Boudreau, Remy (Lawrence Saint-Victor).

CADY MCCLAIN: Live Nude Girls?
"I am not a prude, clearly. I have posed in my underwear and thought it was fun and silly and thanked God for photoshop, but I wouldn’t like a picture of me having sex out there. In fact, the MOST embarrassing moments for me when I was working, were ALWAYS the sex scenes. TOTAL HUMILIATION. I was so uptight. I always, ALWAYS felt like SUCH an assh@%#. BUT, (big but) sometimes I acted brave just to get through it quick. Being a loudmouth/foul mouth can burn off a lot of terror on set, and also keep people from making bulls$%& comments (like 'Wow, you’ve really got a great set of $#%@!' That’s special fun. F%$# off. I’m not for sale.)"

  1. PLEASE no more from Coleridge!! I think everyone remembers him from TV Guide Online. He's a wannabe, not a journalist or writer of any kind!
